How to speed test a server!
Tonight, I'm going to type up a short guide on how to run a speed test from a VPS. When I first got started on system administration, I was bamboozled on how to do this, so I think it would be great to teach all you new Linux users out there the simplest way to get a fairly accurate representation of your VPSs speed.
1 Download the script to use SpeedTest.net
Code wget -O speedtest-cli https://raw.github.com/sivel/speedtest-cli/master/speedtest_cli.py

wget is a command line tool that downloads file from HTTP, HTTPS and FTP servers. -O specifies the name that the file should be saved as.
2 Change the permissions of the script to make it readable
Code chmod +x speedtest-cli

chmod is a command line tool that is used to change the permissions of a file to allow it to be read, changed, and/or executed. Putting the +x after chmod tells the system that you need to make a file able to be ran by any user of the system.
(Yes, spacing always matters. Don't make my typo and waste two seconds of your life like I did.)
3 Run the script.
Code python speedtest-cli --share

Putting python before the name of the file tells the system that it needs to execute the script using the Python programming language. Adding --share at the end of the command tells the SpeedTest script that it needs to output a link to a graphical representation of the server's speed testing results.
Some results on different providers.
If anyone wants to submit the link to the results they got on their servers speed test, feel free to post it in this thread and I'll update the list with the provider/data-center your server with with/in. Please follow the form below:

That was posted a long time ago but it's nice to see it back as I am sure there are plenty of people who didn't saw or nor does know it exists xD

Oh. I wasn't aware of that. But I'm willing to bet that the other person didn't have the idea of keeping a publicly updated list of results from different hosting providers. 😝

Good guide, although it's all over the internet.
Here's a pic of one of my boxes.

Another box running nothing at the moment.
And here's the one that hosts the BH TS

Thanks for the contributions. Seems like we both love our OVH.
Thanks for Posting this.
I've Learned a Thing or Two from this.

And thank you! That's the exact kind of thing I wanted to hear. 🙂

I'm a bit late in asking this, but what kind of package is this hosted on, and what data-center is it in?
Going to be getting access to servers from a few different providers later in the day and I'll provide a nice boost in results on the main thread.
There are many guides out there like this, but thx anyways.
Mine isn't bad for A Russian server:

This is because I was uploading to the server it was better

This is the original speed before I started uploading
