Anime Adventures Weekly - Issue #60

Great Issue as always.
Someone please design me a seal of approval :D (I haven't touched photoshop in like 8 months).

Can't say I agree with the Black Bullet ending.
Other than that, good issue. Look forward to reading the next one.
Good job AA News Team.
Another great AA weekly.
I'm dying to see another series!
First proper (second actual) time being a proofreader for weekly. It was tedious but that was mainly because of my late start on checking the articles...

Great issue once again, and props to Tweety for swiftly sweeping up the series from where Happeh left it.

That cosplay is amazing :O I haven't seen Macross Frontier, but the quality of the costume is incredible!
I'm happy to see the AA Weekly continuing. I was really afraid it was going to be dropped due to Happeh having to leave. (I cri erritiem.)
Great job this week guys. I liked the new graphics and such.

Thanks for the updates though.

It's already out but it's returning with online Co-op and more features.

Vandie doing a great job taking over the manga highlights, it's about time someone picked it up again. Personally, I wouldn't have given Citrus a perfect score. It's a good yuri manga, but not the best by far. The story is cliche and predictable, and the characters for the most part are shallow and unoriginal; I only really liked the main character. But that's my assessment on it.

Always fun to watch Prog and Tails bash on a show, though it'd be a whole lot better if you guys picked one I actually care about.

Cosplay section doing a lot better than I expected. Keep it up.

Webtoons rocking that Yuki Kaijura like a boss.

Happeh can eat a dick.

That's all I got.

Mind telling me a shoujo-ai manga with similar characters as Citrus ?

We could if you want it that way. This is mostly your idea so however you wanna do it is fine with me. However, they have to both be blue because it has to match the color I use for the highlighting of the scores. 👍

It's important to realize there's pretty much no such thing as cardboard copies of characters between series or shows. What I mean is that Citrus very loyally follows a set of tropes and character archetypes which drags it down considerably on the originality scale. Lets go over the main characters step by step.

First off there's Mei. The stoic, emotionless, sugar and ice archetype there's really no need to dig further into. A very common plot device (especially in shoujo-ai & yuri manga) which I've grown quite tired of.

Second there's Matsuri, the cunning love-obstacle and the main drama/love-triangle driving force of the manga. She's arguably slightly more original than Mei in terms of characterization, but her introduction and whole purpose in the manga was so forced and odd I had difficulty seeing her as anything more than a walking plot-device.

Then there's Himeko, who is pretty much just a Matsuri character for Mei. By the midway point she loses screentime and develops into a pretty much pointless background character.

I really don't mind Yuzu as a main character, she's unique and can stand on her own as a character which is more than I can say about a LOT of protagonists I've bore witness to throughout recent years. What bothers me the most about Citrus, however, is how everything, and I mean literally EVERYTHING, is played for drama. With this cast, even more, it's like they're desperately trying to evoke emotion in the reader, but most of the time they're just falling flat on their faces. Contrary to the drama progression of other shoujo-ai manga I've read, Citrus' was just downright annoying at times.

That said, I do like Citrus. It's in my top 10 of shoujo-ai/yuri manga, but were I to put on my critic goggles and review it I'd stress these faults like it's the last thing I did.

Edit:
Apologies, I didn't mean to turn this into a borderline rant.

When reviewing, as someone who has given one 10 in my whole life, 10 has to represent perfection, or as close to perfection as humanly possible. If there are no faults in a manga or show, it deserves a 10. More often than not, that wont happen, so you have to see if the positives outweigh the negatives to such an extent to where it appears they dont even exist, thats the other way to get a 10 in my book. But what it all comes down to is opinion and perception. Saying the manga doesnt deserve a 10 is merely your opinion and perception of the manga and his is that it does. Take note that it is the "Vandie" seal of approval and last week he labels it as "Vandie's rating".
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
