I agree the picture is boring. And I used those colors to match the tie on the background image. I kind of wanted to make it subtle.

EDIT: I noticed the image has a glove in the top pocket, at first this looks like a hand calling you in, which matches well with the title simply imagination, don't know if that was intentional.

I suppose he was inspired with my latest piece. Which isn't a bad thing but there are better sources for inspiration scattered across the web.

Some thing you might want to think about.. is that the layout isn't best to be used for portfolio/freelance purposes imo.

A change in the background image could make a overall improvement in the design.

The current position of the "Login" text makes me feel like its less of a button and more of a form. Maybe brighten the gray a tad more so it stands out.

Perhaps remove the "More Info" text under the "View Portfolio" button. Simply add more info by expanding the canvas and provide more to the homepage.

Enough with the critism, hopefully you take it into consideration upon your next version. Not bad OP, keep it up I would love to see your updated version.

I did mine based off Coinbase's website, and the body isn't even remotely similar to that, but thanks for the input.
