Common Lingo | A guide to understanding the HF language

(Jun 22, 2014 07:05 PM)Aura Wrote:  The White Hat Hacker description is a bit off.
Let's take the official one from Wikipedia is it's closer to the reality : The term "white hat" refers to an ethical computer hacker, or a computer security expert, who specializes in penetration testing and in other testing methodologies to ensure the security of an organization's information systems. This hacker act with the approbation/accord of the network, system, etc. owner in order to conduct his tests on the mentionned network and test it's security.

Thank you, I have changed the definition to a slightly modified version of what you gave me.

There's several definitions you've provided here that are incorrect. If you're to make a guide, at least know what you're talking about first.

Which ones are incorrect? And what would be the correct definitions for the incorrect ones?

Regards,

Hmm, well since you asked.

Award Whore - I will be the first one out of the majority of user's that have this award to say it, the goal isn't to achieve all awards. Being an award whore means you are constantly trying to get new awards. I have turned down several awards, and also had a few purposely removed. I'm sure that others would agree, to obtain all isn't the idea or goal.

DDoS - Distributed Denial of service attack.

Mining - Maintaining the block chain is called mining, and those who do are rewarded with newly created Coins* and transaction fees. Miners may be located anywhere in the world. Miners process payments by verifying each transaction as valid and adding it to the block chain.

A few other definitions are a bit off, but still get the point through. But as I said, if you plan on making a tutorial, make sure it's done right. If you were doing it for anything other than recognition, your pride in creating the guide would have deterred you from releasing it half finished. At least in my opinion. Nice job though, either way.

Thanks, I have edited those definitions.
And concerning your last paragraph, this is not a tutorial, it is a guide that was created by me with maybe 10 phrases with definitions. Since it was started, I have relied on the community here to come up with more words and phrases to add to the guide along with those that I found on my own. Also, thank you for the help.

Very detailed and well laid out thread. I did see some MyBB coding errors but still a great thread!

Thanks! And I fixed the errors that I could find, let me know if some remain.
Hey

I would add SF (since it's related to HF due to the award)
SF stands for SupportForums, another forum owned by Omni and dedicated to support and assistance in various domains. The Support Feather awards was given when you made 100 high quality posts on this forum.
Fiat justitia ruat cælum

My era of providing technical support and malware removal on HackForums is over, so you can stop PM'ing me about it. Sorry.

Thanks, I added this to the OP. 🤝

Also made some corrections on spelling and grammar that I didn't catch before.
Hey

Apples - slang for reputation points, hence; Green Apples = Positive reputation / Red Apples = Negative reputation.

Green Apples and Red Apples are both already in the list.
Hey

Very nice read, thanks for this informative thread.
Here's a few others :

MBAM : Stands for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, the most popular Anti-Malware program to this date.
JRT : Stands for Junkware Removal Tool, a tool that is used to scan a system and remove various PUPs, Junkwares, Adwares and Browser Hijackers.
Kali : Stands for Kali Linux, a full pentesting-oriented *nix distro based on Debian, created by Offensive Security.
BT : Stands for BackTrack, the ancestor of Kali Linux. Backtrack used to be the most popular pentesting *nix distro around, before it got discontinued and replace by Kali Linux. Created by Offensive Security.

If you need the link for JRT, take the one from BleepingComputer.com, Downloads section.
