[Ubuntu 14.04] Nvidia 840M driver help

Hey folks whats up, I am trying to install the nvidia driver for the 840M but appearently it's the most hardest thing ever (that's what she said)

So far I've tried
nvidia-346 (gave me a blank screen)
nvidia-340 (gave me a blank screen)
nvidia-331 (worked sortof but was unable to go into the nvidia settings and change it to GPU)

I've simply gave these commands to install it, "sudo apt-get install nvidia-346 nvidia-settings nvidia-prime"
I needed the Prime as my CPU & GPU can do graphic stuff so I could switch between them but that doesn't really work

I've also tried this but then the desktop wouldn't show up anymore after login ( http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2014...er-337-25/ )

Model of laptop if that's any use for you, MSI GP60

I don't believe your Xorg is configured when you install nvidia settings. So you may have to do that manually.
Did you try
PHP Code

<?php
apt
-get install nvidia-driver

When trying that it gave me this:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package nvidia-driver is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'nvidia-driver' has no installation candidate

I have not touched the Xorg config files or anything yet

I've never had to dick around with nvida, everything I've installed onto has been AMD.
Looks like this post should help you out

Well.. in case you can't find the correct one using the repos you might want to just simply install it with NVIDIA binaries.

http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/82252 -> This is the correct driver for your GPU.

Read this carefully and follow it.

Tried it this way, the driver install went successful but only the desktop wallpaper is showing, not the icons etc after login :/

I pretty much did
sudo service lightdm stop
sudo chmod +x NV......run
sudo ./NV......run
sudo service lightdm start

Did a reboot but only wallpaper shows after login
I will follow the tutorial and will let you know ;)

Edit: Followed the tutorial but it didn't went too well...

Edit2: ok ok So far more googling 'n stuff, I've tried bumblebee once more and that program finally worked!
I gave it a shot in heaven benchmark and had bumblebee disabled, ran the benchmark and it was a great 4 FPS... yeey...
Enabled bumblebee and it jumped to ~20 FPS

Thanks for all people trying to help :)

If you we're working how I fixed it...
Code
sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia primus bumblebee-indicator
reboot

sudo apt-get install python-appindicator
sudo apt-get install git
git clone https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/bumblebee-ui.git
cd bumblebee-ui
sudo ./INSTALL

I think you should have now the bumblebee app indicator, run it, you'll probably see a X or whatever in the bumblebee indicator (something is wrong sign)

sudo apt-get install nvidia-331
reboot

Maybe now or after 1-3 reboots the bumblebee icon will go normal (no red signs etc)
to see if bumblebee actually works

Code
sudo apt-get install mesa-utils
optirun glxgears

You'll see in the console a big FPS +200FPS, run "glxgears" without the optirun in front of it and it will probably be 60 FPS
