Roger Waters' Mini-Feedback Thread
I figured I'd make a feedback thread about things that have been on my mind for a while and since I have a few minutes, I thought I'd put it into a thread. I wouldn't consider this to be a great big feedback thread as I'd like it to be, but I figure since I have a few minutes, I might as well do something productive. Again, this isn't my whole feedback on everything, rather a sample of the big thread I want to create. The larger feedback thread I expect to create later on, possibly in the summertime depending on my work schedule. Anywho, let's get this thread on the road. Sections
As a whole, I believe the current selection of sections (or sub-forums) is a great variety of things in the best interests of most Hack Forums members. I believe that people can learn just about anything in the sections we have from hacking to coding to graphics and much more. There is a ton of information on here which I've taken advantage of over the (almost) four years I've been on here. There's always something to do and always something new you can dig your nose into. For the things that could be improved with certain sections will be listed on their own separate parts of this thread but I believe that there are many inactive sections of the site can be removed, mainly these sections are in the Gaming area of the site which were active at one point but have since died out and have lost activity by a ton.As a mentor, I spend a ton of my time in this section. I get to see some of the most outrageous questions being asked and every once and a while there's a good policy question being asked or a decent feedback thread being created. For most feedback threads, I'd honestly like to see more out of them. People seem to keep making so-called "feedback" threads which mainly tell their story and how the found the site and then they give shout outs. With the content found on these threads, I find there isn't any real feedback given on anything on the site, I feel like people create them just to create them. If someone is going to create a feedback thread, I'd like to see actual feedback, things that can improve the site and its members. Telling a story and telling people who your friends are isn't feedback. If you are going to tell a story, members should tell how the experience made them a better member and how something could change their entire outlook of the site, it should have an effect on members to influence changes on themselves to become better members of the site. As for the Rules, News, and Announcements, I feel like they are posted often, but I'd like to see more. I'd like to see updates from Omniscient posted in here every couple of weeks even if it isn't much to update us on just let us know what's going on with new implementations and features. This would help members from constantly inquiring about the features that were suggested and approved before and helps ease the pain of waiting for them to finally be implemented. As for other things going on with the site, I'd like to see members reporting something odd going on with the site instead of talking about it in other places of the site and use the section for what it was partially made for. Most policy questions posted in the section can be answered 95% of the time with a simple search or a quick read through the help documents. With that being said, I cannot recommend that people touch up on their knowledge of site rules, it could save them from warnings or bans.
This is an extension of my feedback of the Rules, Announcements, News, and Feedback section. I believe that the threads in this section are a lot like the Policy Question threads posted in the RANF section. Most "Suggestions" that people post have been suggested and denied already or are Suggestions That Will Not Be Accepted. An "idea" that would prevent this would to implement something similar to what reddit has for sub-reddits, where if something has already been posted or created, it will not allow you to post the thread again. Now I'm not sure how well that would work with the way MyBB works, but it is an idea that all forums should have and now that I think about it, I'll submit the idea to the people who run MyBB. Anyways, There are always ways to improve this section, I like the work some members have put into making threads to help stop the repetition of the many threads that have been suggested and denied several times.
The Lounge will always be The Lounge, everyone seems to go in there on a daily basis. I like seeing the interesting threads people post in there that actually make a good discussion. The main problems I see with this section is that many people seem to think that you're supposed to use that section to ask site questions, post threads for areas you don't know the section to post it in, and to troll. Instead of posting site policy questions in there, please open your eyes and post them in the right section, the section is clearly stated there and doesn't take any more effort to post it there. For threads posted in there that you don't know where to post them, you can ask a Mentor or Staff member where to post it, we don't bite and we are here to assist members. Again, we don't bite guys.
As a whole, groups are generally good. There are always the groups who stand out and the one or two groups that seem to be disliked by most of the community. The groups seem to do a good job at what they make themselves out to be when they try to make themselves look like contributing groups of people on the site. I believe that groups don't need to contribute to the site unless they make themselves out to be contributing groups in the first place. If groups don't want to be criticized, then don't make your motto or slogan something that makes you look like a contributing group of the site. It's really that simple. New members and members who aren't in the loop will look at that and think you guys are a hard working group who works to accomplish something which directly impacts your image.
Null Group
Since the announcement of The Alliance changing about a year or so ago, I've realized that the site will never be able to have a group as good as them on this site ever again. I'm not saying that Null hasn't been a good group in it's time here, but I haven't seen many public threads created by them, but when there have been, they've been pretty good. I like the way the group seems to be exclusive with the non buy-in members, there have been quite a bit of notable members who've shown their worth to the site by making contributions such as getting the Wiki site up and running and HF's XMPP chat which have benefited the site greatly. Nothing bad to say about them except that I'd like to see more of the group.Echo Group
This group doesn't make themselves out to be that big or contributing so I'm not going to go too in-depth with what I have to say about the group. They describe themselves as a "lounge group for talented individuals". To this, I can say this is true. I was in the group for about a month or so and there wasn't much going on. I don't know if that has changed at all, but I can say that their group name was a very valid representation of what their sub-forum was, meaning that it was pretty much dead and if it was a physical place, you could hear an echo when you talked. Specialists Group
I was in this group for about 4 months or so before leaving on my own terms. The group had some pretty good members who made good contributions on their own but that was about it. There have been too many leadership changes in the group that the group hasn't been able to make as many contributions as I'd like to see. I like that they chose a name that someone proposed for The Brotherhood before it had a name, I don't know if that was intentional or not, but it is a pretty nice name for a group and to say the least, is something I'd use if I had my own group. The description is "The Specialist is a group consisting of substantiated individuals who have achieved outstanding success and shown passion towards their own field of expertise.", which describes the group fairly well, though I believe the grammar mistake in that should definitely be fixed, it's been there since the group was first made and has bothered me since.Red Lions Group
People seem to have positive and negative opinions about this group. I'd like to see the group active but I highly doubt that will happen as the owner logs in every few months and the leader logs in every few weeks. With that, I believe it's safe to say it's a legacy group. It made some pretty good donations to the site and a few good threads but I don't see it making that big of a return. For some people who don't know this already, Red Lions isn't an original name from Hack Forums, it comes from a college sports team called the San Beda Red Lions. I'm not sure why people bother to look up to the group as being "high quality" anymore, it's dead and most of the members saying that it is "high quality" likely weren't even around when the group was active and made most of it's donations.Nightfall Group
Nightfall and it's predecessors have been interesting groups to be in, members are always posting in their sub-forum and although some of the stuff posted there is questionable, the group is fun to be a part of. There's always some kind of shenanigans going on and brings some fun to the site. If you are a laid-back kind of person and like having fun while playing video games and stuff, this is the group to be a part of. Zero Group
I see this as a "sister-group" to Echo. It was once a marketing group but has become a lounge group. Though much doesn't go on in the group, I can't complain, they no longer "market" themselves to be a marketing group (see my pun there? hah). Anyways, I'm not sure if the group is changing again like a few threads made it out to be such as being up for sale, selling membership spots, changing its name, or selling leadership positions. There seems to be a lot of shenanigans going on within the group much like Nightfall does, making it an interesting group to be a part of.Polymath Group
Though the group is now up for sale and my departure from the group wasn't the best back when it was first getting started, I can't say this group wasn't a good group or that it didn't have a strong impact on the site. Since the beginning of the group and the change from Dynasty, it made itself out to be different than what Dynasty was. To people on the outside of the group, they made it seem like the group was different from the rest and that clearly showed with the events they've had on the site with Polymath Radio and the Polybot chat they created. It was an interesting concept to get involved with not only the community, but a way to give some stuff away and recruit some new members to the group. You would be a liar to say that the group didn't have an impact on the site, I'm sad to say the group will be missed when it is sold.AnimeFan! Group
I'd rather not go into too much detail about the group because Anime is a very controversial topic here. I haven't seen much of this group other than a recruitment thread or two. I'm assuming most of the members of this group are the one's with the anime schoolgirls and stuff. Since the creation of this group I've seen less of those members with the anime schoolgirls on their profiles so I suppose the creation of this group did the community a favor. Not sure what goes on in their group and I'm not sure I want to find out what goes on in there.L'appel du Vide Group
If someone's in this group, they are usually someone with a good opinion and someone who can put up a pretty good debate. As the Science, Religion, Philosophy, and Politics group, the group discusses those topics and more, including music, movies, and literature. Inside the group sub-forum there's been some ups and downs including required activity and no required activity. As a group leader I know how hard it is to maintain a certain amount of activity in a group and the group is currently at a point trying to keep decent activity without having people make low quality posts to make the required activity. It's a pretty good group to be a part of and the members are pretty welcoming. Lots of intelligent people in there and serves a good spot as a group on here.Fortune Group
Honestly, I haven't seen much of this group since they changed over to the Fortune idea. In my opinion, this group should have stayed Revolution instead of changing. They've made themselves out to be a marketing group and once again makes all marketing groups look bad, looks like they took no time to take the spot Enterprise left behind when both Astonish and Grievous left the site. They've yet to prove themselves as a real legitimate group on here to be taken seriously.Debug Group
Not going to say much about the group since I'm a leader of this group.Titans Group
Titans has changed a lot since changing their userbars. When they had the old userbar that looked like a piece of shriveled up piece of bacon, they didn't do much to stand out to most people. Since changing to the new userbar, they've started the Casino which became pretty popular with even Omni getting involved in it, which says a lot. This shows that the group is doing something different and it's something that all groups should try to do. I've heard that they are trying something else very soon so I'm looking forward to what that brings.Brotherhood Group
Not going to say much about the group since I'm a leader of this group.Writers Group
Since the writers are broken down into two separate teams, I felt it is only appropriate to give two separate thoughts on them.Wiki Team
When I was thinking about writing this up about a week ago, I planned on criticizing them heavily for not having anything publicly published in the few years or so this team has been here. I was very surprised to find that the Wiki was finally released this week and that they are working on getting things published again. Though people don't see much content on the site right now, I can guarantee that there are more articles in their Sub-Forum which just have to be added to the site. Looking forward to assisting them with some articles and details on them.HF News Team
As much as I'd like to say a bunch of good things about this team, I just can't say them. The News team has been on the decline in the past several months and got really low during last summer where 2 editions were published in a month. As someone who was a member of the team for about 8 months, I felt like quitting the team several times because other members make new members feel like shit which made a few highly capable members of the team leave due to prolonged harassment by those members. I was also removed from the group at some point back in October and still haven't been given a legitimate reason why I was kicked, but I had noticed back at that time that the leader took no time to replace me with one of his friends, something done in the past with other capable members. Since my departure from the group, I've felt threatened by the leader of the group after he's started non-sense and drama through Skype messages and Private messages. I've even been told not to reply to HF News editions and had my posts removed. With this, I can predict that HF News may not be around much longer as there needs to be a new leader appointed to this. Editions in general haven't been up to par and things are slowly being removed from editions or editions have content that isn't even relevant when posted.Closing Remarks
I didn't expect to write this much and even though it is titled as a mini-feedback thread, I still have more to write about. I hope to write a longer one over summer break. It is roughly 1 AM as I'm finishing this so I'll read over it in the morning and add more onto it and make adjustments as necessary. Let me know what you think so I can improve for the next time I write one of these.
