Software engineers make more money than developers, and often have more responsibilities. They will also do things like research, collect data, write final design specifications, follow regulations, etc, AND code. They also require much more education/harder difficulty level.
Software developers are typically just code monkeys, and are outsourced very often. You can do this job without a degree. Most people working here have either 2 year or 4 year degrees from a college. (Pretty blunt, and hopefully not offensive to anyone, but in my experience it is the truth). Software engineers are developers as well and that's not always true. They don't have more responsibilities, just different ones. Software programmers are usually the code monkies, software developers aren't usually out sourcesaourced. You're getting programmer and developer mixed up, which I can't blame you because most use the words interchangeably. And no, no software engineer has multiple degrees unless they minored in like mathematics or something. You go for a CIS or CS in some cases and that's it, its pointless to get multiple.
This is fairly opinion-based, as the work of a software engineer/developer is dependant on the work they are hired to perform.
What seems to make sense to me is that the title of a software engineer could be someone who designs the skeleton of a system, whereas a software developer layers the meat of the project. They usually will be able to perform both jobs, however, which makes them interchangeable. The approach is what changes in each scenario of the project. nameless

Yes, most software engineering and software developer jobs require both just a Bachelor's in CS or a similar major.
Semantically developer and engineer are different and I think the posters above covered a lot of it. Basically engineering = more rigor.
However I've found that in practice software engineer is basically a fancy way of saying software developer, and it's just a title that varies by company. Many computer science programs are math-intensive. Some even argue that math should be considered a branch of mathematics. Math and computer science go hand in hand.

And aside from that, most CS majors require calc 3 + linear which is pretty high up in math (obviously there are more advanced but then its specific towards topics, which doesn't make you better at math) (Jul 31, 2015 01:55 PM)Apathy Wrote: There are many computer science students who are very good at math. I think you mean programming a branch of mathematics? :P And eh, I don't use math much outside of performance optimizations and game programming (Jul 31, 2015 02:13 PM)Corios Wrote: I think you mean programming a branch of mathematics? :P There are some who argue that CS should be considered a branch of mathematics. I don't agree with it, but there are people in academia who make a case for it. I'm not saying that many of the jobs out there are math intensive. I know most of them aren't, but on the theory side of it you run into a lot of mathematics like graph theory and trees, which obviously are applied in programming, cryptography, etc. (Jul 31, 2015 02:13 PM)Corios Wrote: CS is a part of the Schools of Engineering lol, if you graduate with a CS degree you're an engineer. Stop with your bullshit . Cs degree is a joke. (Jul 31, 2015 04:51 PM)ubuntusucksdick Wrote: No it's not. Stop with your bullshit . Cs degree is a joke. Actually, the CS department at my school is a part of the School of Engineering. I had to apply to the University and then the school before I could be accepted into the major. Many CS programs are quite rigorous. (Jul 31, 2015 04:55 PM)Apathy Wrote: Actually, the CS department at my school is a part of the School of Engineering. A bachelor of applied science falls under engineering. That's that. |
