Kali Linux or Linux

Hello i am just starting up and have been reading through the forum pages for several days now and i have been seeing Kali Linux and Linux are recommended to use for coding. I am just wondering what is the difference between them and what is each one used for?
There is no such thing as just "Linux". There are many linux distros such as Kali Linux. Kali Linux is the preferred distro for many hackers due to the fact that it comes pre-loaded with many of the most useful hacking/pentesting tools for nearly any project... AND it is bootable from flash drives. It is debian based so commands that work on Ubuntu (one of the most popular linux distros) will also work on Kali.

Hope that clarified your confusion somewhat.

If you want to start with C & ASM, go for Debian + Gnu's compiler collection + Sublime text.

I learned html/css then python and then c/c++. While doing all of this i had a virtual installation of kali and debian (2 separate things) to learn to use linux and helpful pentesting tools.

To learn c/c++ i used jasmas c/c++ programming bible. It seems outdated but it is the best book on the language ive ever read/used. I also use dev-c++ for my ide on windows :) any questions feel free to pm me!
If you are new to linux start with min or ubuntu and use it for 1 year or so
Ubuntu + Sublime Text is your choice

Kali Linux and Linux, lol. Kali is a security distribution based on Debian.

Nice reply to the OP, +3 keep up the good work.
As mentioned above, there are going to be many different flavors of Linux.

If you are looking to code, whether that be Python, C, or C++, grab something like Ubuntu or a spin off of Ubuntu. Debian is rock solid as well and is a great starting point too (Kali uses Debian, and so does Tails). However, each flavor is going to have its uses. Ubuntu is pretty resource intensive compared to others. I personally recommend xubuntu, or lubuntu, as it is a more lightweight streamlined version of Ubuntu. Terminal will work all the same, you get the idea.

Again, if you are looking to just code in a Linux environment, and not use any Microsoft frameworks (asp.net, .net, VB, VBA), pick from something mentioned above or by the other members. Some people like to start in VB because it gives you a good idea of how front end and back end code and modules work together. They are also pretty popular for making fake programs, or for making things that are GUI based.

Kali Linux isn't an every day operating system. Tails wasn't mentioned here but a lot of people try to use that as their daily driver as well. They just don't come built in with the support of everything you might need to get coding in a timely manner. Kali is going to be more for using/generating payloads, MITM, defacing tools, SET, and, well, that type of thing. But remember, don't get tunnel vision and just use one tool or program one tool, the best thing you can do for your arsenal is have an expansive repertoire - whether this be through knowledge, experience, or straight code/reverse engineering knowledge. The more time you spend, the more you'll get comfortable with. Take it one step at a time! Let me know if there might be any other questions you have.
Let me clear 🙂
Kali Linux is the sub-distro of Linux based on Debian.

Means :-

Linux->Ubuntu, Debian , Arch , Redhat etc.

So, Debian is one of the most stable Linux Distro for all Penetration testers/hackers Like:- Kali linux , Cyborg hawk etc.

But for programming i will say Ubuntu is best [Of course their is no much difference btw Ubuntu and Kali but the only difference is Kali Linux is for security researchers and Ubuntu is for everyone]

So, go with ubuntu or mate Distro if you wants to start with programming because in Kali Linux you will face a lot of problem like:- Broken packages and its broken-dependency etc.

Try Ubuntu or mate 👍

Thanks 🤝
While I have used Kali in the past and have no issue using it, it does come with a crap ton of tools of which you will use only a handful. Personally I think you would be better off with another distro and installing the tools that you will actually use. I wouldn't recommend using it as an everyday operating system, as mentioned before Ubuntu is a good starting distro and has a massive community to help if you run into trouble, Mint is also nice (I use Debian), if you are unsure what distro to use you could always set up a few virtual machines or run some live Cd's and have a play, distrowatch . com has a nice list of top ranking distro's. As for the coding side of things any OS will be fine. I guess as to what programming language to learn I would say that's a personal preference, I'm currently learning python.
