• Suggestion description:
A dynamic average price for BTC listed in the Crypto Currency forum section.
After brainstorming about the best positioning of this, I couldn't come up with anything
else other than to list is as a stickied thread of which the title is updated using a public API
generating the current average BTC price in USD. The lowest and highest price in the past 60min could be stored in a DB table and rewritten or pulled if the API supports it.
https://bitcoinaverage.com/en/plans offers a free plan of their API which allows for 5,000 requests per month, or 6.91 requests per hour.
There are also paid plans which offer substantially more requests to be pulled. 62.5 per hour or 1 each minute for $12/mo or $129.6/yr.
Maybe there are better and/or cheaper sources to pull the avg. BTC price from, I haven't researched it deeply enough if that's the case.

Omniscient 06-17-2014: Sorry I don't plan on doing this at this time.
We are 2 and a half years later, and BTC is more popular than ever. That's why I thought to re-suggest this idea.
The price and price changes are often-discussed topics in the section, while I don't discourage the discussion of these changes in any way, I do find the suggestion a good addition to the discussions. There are always newcomers to the section, and every one uses their own 3rd party website chart to follow the price. This feature would allow for people to monitor the price on-site without a significant use of resources.

Not gonna lie, It's a nice suggestion, however, people shouldn't be lazy and just click https://hackforums.net/btcv.php
DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS MEMBER
Actually quite a decent suggestion. It is creative.
Sounds like a good idea to me.
I rather google for the actual prices, but it will prevent a lot of LQ threads like "wow it dropped" and such in my opinion.

That came to my attention as I was writing my suggestion, however:
- That custom page is only available to upgraded members
- It is a custom page showing static data that is pulled only when the page is loaded
My suggestion is about a dynamic price in the Crypto Currency section itself.

Well, I'm not hating on your idea at all, believe me it's a cool sounding idea.. But, that would be giving an upgraded feature to non upgraded members?

If you look at it that way, and I understand your reasoning, it would make the suggestion invalid, as suggestions regarding member privileges are not allowed. The basis of my suggestion however has no intentions of bypassing these privileges and I can only hope Omniscient will ignore this aspect when judging this suggestion.

Well good luck mate, It's not a horrible idea, just.. the perks kind of do bypass a little of not being upgraded.
Good idea!
Pretty awesome feature.
very good idea it would be nice upgrade for the forum
I've actually thought about this. It would be nice if current BTC price was somehow automated into certain posts. I hate it when someone mentions value or predictions and doesn't say what current price is at.
We already have the code running to grab 3 sites BTC info.

Here is a nice question. Is there any API's to get a historical BTC price based on date? Everywhere I look seems to be inadequate for a simple call returning price based on a single date or timestamp. If we can find one I can possibly work from it.

Found this when reading https://bitcoincharts.com/about/markets-api/
Exact chart (symbol=btceUSD) can be changed by selecting one of these:
http://api.bitcoincharts.com/v1/csv/
timestamp filled in with 01/11/2017 @ 9:20pm (UTC)
Returns
Quote:1484169606,781.886000000000,0.325267690000
USD price is listed after the comma separator.
The website asks not to query more often than 15m. I believe this is what you're looking for?
The queried result can be stored for 15m on a HF DB and re-query each 15m to update the price, and whatever implementation you have in mind for forum posts or display, it can come from the stored value rather than a direct query, due to the 15m limit.

That's close but again, too much data. Unsure why none of these don't have currency (USD,BTC,EUR) and timestamp. They could also just do High and Low of that day in results.
Wasted 45 minutes looking for something as close as possible to that data output. :(

They have low and high here, that's not what you want?

1) Too much data
2) Omniscient wants to be able to pull "USD/EUR/low/high" data based on date or a timestamp
