Bastard!!: Ankoku no Hakaishin

[Image: C88KnY0.jpg]

Synopsis (Courtesy of MAL):
Quote:The characters in Bastard!! have forsaken technology and have traded it in for magic and the occult arts. The story revolves around a group of five magicians who set out to rebuild their world after a rampaging God destroys it and tips it into chaos. Driven by their leader Dark Schneider, Gara, Arshes Nei, Abigail and Kall Su set out to conquer kingdoms in the hope of rebuilding them into utopias, with each of the magicians having their own personal agenda in doing so. However, Dark Schneider's often reckless manner and short temper leads him to wreak havoc where ever he goes. He is trapped by a group of clerics in a baby boy, leaving the four without a leader.

Fifteen years later, the four still continue their quest but their motives have changed to despotic world domination, and it is up to Dark Schneider to show them the "error of their ways," when he is freed by the clerics who once imprisoned him, so that he may defend them against his former comrades. It has now become Dark Schneider's responsibility to track down each one of his companions and set them on the right path again, but what seems to be the once reckless and amoral Dark Schneider has changed over his fifteen year imprisonment within the boy, Luche Len Len.

Eps: 6 (OVA)
Studio(s): AIC
Aired: Aug 25, 1992 - Jun 25, 1993
Genre(s): Action, Adventure, Comedy, Ecchi, Fantasy, Seinen
Sub/Dub: Both exist, but for the most amount of laughter I recommend the dubbed version.
Similar anime: Berserk (1997), Detroit Metal City, JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken (TV), Hagure Yuusha no Aesthetica
MAL

What happens when you combine 80s/90s cliché fantasy plot, super powers, and an MC that is manliness incarnate with the same VA as Futurama's Zapp Brannigan? Clearly the greatest animated meme ever of course. Bastard is a 6 episode OVA, that was sadly originally meant to be 8 before being cut short, that takes the viewer on a journey through a war-stricken realm on the verge of collapse. But not if Zapp frickin' Brannigan... I mean Dark Schneider has anything to say about it! The animation is what you would expect for a 90s anime, and the plot is for all intentions terrible as it is meant to be a spoof for many of the anime up to that point. There's plenty of comedy and the characters do make this to be the few anime that are "so horribly done that they're great." If you have 3 hours to spend wanting to have a good laugh I recommend this one for you! ;)

2001-ya Monogatari

[Image: ScbNtFP.jpg]

Synopsis (Courtesy of MAL):
Quote:A collection of short stories that look to mankind's exploration of space, and examine the possibilities that we could face when we decide to take those first fateful steps into the unknown.

Chapters: 20
Volumes: 3
Author(s): Yukinobu Hoshino
Published: May 5, 1984 - May 6, 1986
Genre(s): Drama, Sci-Fi, Space, Seinen
MAL

Just as is described in the synopsis, this is a collection of science fiction short stories about endeavors into space. Some who may read it will find similar comparisons to works such as Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (which I believe the work is based on given its name meaning "2001 Nights"). However the enjoyable aspect lays in that it stays in the often neglected "realistic sci-fi" sub-genre, using known scientific principles whilst also leaning on fiction. This creates a gripping plot for anyone of such caliber, so if this sort of deep reading piques your interest then I recommend these shorts stories.

Mushishi

[Image: zTkT1jS.jpg]

{Synopsis}
"Mushi": the most basic forms of life in the world. They exist without any goals or purposes aside from simply "being." They are beyond the shackles of the words "good" and "evil." Mushi can exist in countless forms and are capable of mimicking things from the natural world such as plants, diseases, and even phenomena like rainbows.
This is, however, just a vague definition of these entities that inhabit the vibrant world of Mushishi, as to even call them a form of life would be an oversimplification. Detailed information on Mushi is scarce because the majority of humans are unaware of their existence.
So what are Mushi and why do they exist? This is the question that a "Mushishi," Ginko, ponders constantly. Mushishi are those who research Mushi in hopes of understanding their place in the world's hierarchy of life.
Ginko chases rumors of occurrences that could be tied to Mushi, all for the sake of finding an answer.
It could, after all, lead to the meaning of life itself.

{Personal Opinion}
The anime is a refreshing change from the action-packed intense-plotted animes that I watched. The anime, unlike most anime which have thin plots that you can see through by the 11th minute that are made for casual entertainment only, provokes thought and really makes one think. Questions such as that of identity (Ep 22, Shrine in the Sea) and love (Ep 19, String from the Sky) as well as that of responsibility and morality (Ep 9, The Heavy Seed) are the beauty of Mushishi. The journey of Ginko as well as some of his past are revealed in a non-chronological order, and in each of his ventures we find ourself asking another question about the way of life and the connection between man and nature.

{The Story}
Each episodes are a separate story that tells us of Ginko, the main character, and his journey around the world studying mushis and solving the problems that they caused. Although each of the episodes have a tightly connected plot, there are no huge overarching plot. While this allow each episode to ask us a new question in the same format and way of thinking, it also is a bit repetitive and might be disliked by someo.

{The Characters}
Ginko is the main character and is the only who appears in more than 3 episodes (the doctor does not count since he does nothing) so I guess he is the only one we can talk about.
Ginko, unlike other Mushishis, does not solve problems related to mushis by exterminating them and getting rid of them, he instead works out a path that allows man and mushi to walk together without harming each other. This is due to a fundamental difference of belief: Other mushishis believe mushis' wrongdoing to be their fault, while Ginko believes it to be simply them being themselves, and not the fault of any. Could we say the same about human, and deny responsibility for all of our wrongdoings simply because we are being who we are?

{Soundtrack}
The OP of the anime is "The Sore Feet Song" by Ally Kerr, a perfect choice for the anime. The song is perfectly executed, and sets a slow, peaceful and somewhat sentimental atmosphere for the episodes.

{Overall}
While this anime might be found boring by those who are used to action filled animes with exciting plots and a strong protagonist fighting against a super-villain antagonist, it is an anime that those who love philosophy or simply wants a break from the stereotypical anime will greatly enjoy.

Senran Kagura is getting ridiculous at this point. They keep pumping out one game after another to the point that it's probably overtaking a lot of older anime game franchises in terms of sheer volume; it's impressive considering I don't see it talked about as much as I'd expect for how well it seems to be doing.

Absolutely true.

In fact I didn't even know it existed until recently, they really are keeping under the radar from what you'd expect.
