What's the damn point in being subscribed to that many? Jeez
Wasnt there an automatic subscribe feature to threads you posted on? That mightve been why people had so many by accident.

By default it's disabled. So those who alter it and subscribe to every thread they post on do so willingly on their own.

Was this causing a load of emails being sent?

I mainly used it to see how many views were on a thread or keep up to date with really really old threads.

EDIT: I looked at the bans page and saw 3 sneaky bastards.

UserCP looks a lot cleaner.
Thread Subscriptions aren't a necessity in my opinion, won't be missed if removed for me.
Why would people even do this? We already have people being banned for stuff like thread edit abuse. Just seems like they were asking for it to be honest. Not too bothered as I didn't even use the feature myself.

Over time it'd be pretty easy to build up a good amount of threads with consistent use of the feature. The fault lies in never clearing out old threads, they probably just didn't think much of it.

If you had turned on default subscription when replying to threads, and then posted a lot, you'd end up subscribed to hundreds and thousands of them, which is what I guess happened with the members who got banned:

e.g. Dean had 4800 according to the ban, and has 9,734 posts, which assuming he subscribed to all threads he posted on, is an average of roughly 2 posts per thread, which seems right

Personally I really like them, I subscribe to only around 3 at a time, currently the weekly reports and a couple of threads in the API SF, but it means I can see them at the same time as seeing replies to my own threads on usercp, so I'd personally prefer if they weren't removed completely :)

There's a difference between 'slowly building up threads' and subscribing to 11,000 in what I assume was a short period of time.

Well the user that prompted the bans ( https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=5721645 ) has been a member since 2012, for him it could've been a slow build-up.
Just curious, is there a performance impact on having so many thread subscriptions?

I'd imagine larger database in general would impact performance a bit, plus usercp loading time to query the thread subscriptions table.

It was also perhaps causing this bug: https://hackforums.net/showthread.php?tid=5721645
Wow didnt knew this would get you banned since there was a feature that subs to a thread you've posted on. I used this a lot.
