3.19 Max GHz Suddenly stunning @ 0.19 GHz

Hey there!

I’m writing this from my phone, so sorry for any mistakes, but recently I went to a website that had a hidden cryptominer in it. I have no clue if that was linked to this, but I want to mention it in the event that it was.

Anyways, I’ve reinstalled Windows 10 twice now, and regardless of the reinstall I still get my normal computing power for about 5 minutes before it immediately drops to 0.19.

Please help me out, I will answer any questions about my build.
I don't think modern CPUs can operate in such broad range. What CPU do you have?

Just an Intel i5-6500.

It's a quad core 3.19 GHz. Within 10 minutes of booting my PC, it drops to a 0.19 GHz speed and my computer is practically useless until it bluescreens.
You should take out your cpu, make sure all of the prongs are in order - nothing effected, also I would try taking out 1 stick of ram, and switching it slots.

I have had a problem similar to this, and had it eliminated down to bad ram stick. Ordered 2 new ram sticks, installed, everything worked just fine afterwards.

Definitely a CPU problem, running 100 degrees celsius while idle. Goes from 55 to 100 in a matter of 10 minutes.

I’m not familiar with building, and there’s a fan on top of my CPU. I don’t want to mess anything up taking it out :/
Your problem is overheating that's why the speed is throttled. I think, there is something wrong with thermal compound or the sink is not installed properly.

Would that just suddenly happen? It just randomly happened, my PC has been running very smoothly and then suddenly it starts overheating.
It can. Visually inspect the heat sink, try to rock it very gently from side to side. If there is free movement, tighten it a little.

Depending on the age of the compound, you might have to replace it.

I’ve had this computer for about 7 months, I’ll check it when it cools down (just went over 100 again)
If you have experience applying thermal paste, just go ahead and replace it.

Thats what I was about to say. It shouldn't happen on a PC that is only 7 months old but my dads PC was running slow and rising up to like 109 eventually I figured out that his thermal paste had somehow melted! I have no idea how that happened but I am going to replace the thermal paste soon haha.
I didn't know such high frequency processors would underclock themselves all the way from 3 Ghz to 200 Mhz. That's pretty nuts. But given you aren't saying megahertz, I'm going to assume you're reading the right values. The integrated GPU has a base clock of 350 Mhz which is sounds more likely ... I don't know, that is weird.

Like others said; thermal issue. Regardless, even a stock cooler should accommodate a full load from a miner much better than that. Something is off there. What cooler are you using?

Don't be afraid of working on your computer. !!!Unless it'll void your warranty!!! Replacing thermal paste is a trivial task that is really hard to mess up.

It will..... I have an old Radeon 2600GPU card with that SHITE "Arctic silver"
One day it smelled like Hairy crab cooking, opened it up and the Arctic sliver had actually melted A turned into sliverballs that has leaked out from between the spacing.

All this sliver loaded crap can have the same problem, then you have the Chinese , selling "solder paste" as fake Arctic silver.

Haha wow 😏 I know and the funny thing is I never buy the cheap thermal paste because of this and it still happened but I buy it from Best Buy or Fries so no fakes here. I guess it just goes to show that you should change your thermal paste like every year.
