TrueCrypt Alternative

I'm looking for a TrueCrypt alternative, I want to encrypt an external hard drive with some sensitive files on it. I know that TrueCrypt isn't supported anymore and has some unpatched security issues. I'd use BitLocker but my version of Windows 10 doesn't come with it. What's a good alternative to using TrueCrypt to encrypt devices?

Stay away from bitlocker, closed source proprietary shitware owned by ShitSoft

Has others have said Veracrypt is a very good alternative at least in my opinion.

I will expand on what i said previously Veracrypt is a really good option due to many things for example if i am not mistaken then it is based on the Truecrypt source code and is completely free and open source

I agree with this however i would add stay away from anything MicroSoft based
https://veracrypt.fr/

However if you want to encrypt partitions with pre-existing data, you may have better luck with: https://diskcryptor.net/wiki/Main_Page

👍

Story is that the keys are stored on MS servers. They will hand the keys right over to the feds.

Veracrypt is good from what I here.

well, theoretically if you choose to export your backup locally and not on your microsoft account you should be safe, even safer if you dont have any microsoft account linked to your windows which will make it harder to identify you
on the other side, on that incident with apple refusing to decrypt an iphone for the feds, bill gates stated that apple should allow them access which makes it plausible for microsoft to implement a backdoor in bitlocker like a master password that can decrypt anything but if they did this what is stopping them to backdoor the whole operating system itself?

so is it safe to use bitlocker?depends from who you are trying to hide your data
if you are paranoid enough you could always have your date in a vera crypt volume inside a bitlocker partition
