What if I told you that something as inconspicuous as this key lanyard

holds an entire operating system loaded with tools that could be used to either fix other computers or to hack them?

The truth is you can preform a plethora of tasks with just a single USB and it's uses are endless. This is nothing new however still very useful.

How to create a bootable USB stick on Windows.

Download Universal USB installer

First, you’ll need to download Universal USB installer  which is a program that lets you install a selection of Linux distributions on a USB drive.
There are many ways and programs you can use to do this however I've found that Universal USB installer  is a wonderful program that hasn't given me issues, like some of the others.

Step #1 Choose the Linux operating system of your choice from the menu
Step #2 Locate the ISO of the Linux operating system you have saved on your computer
Step #3 Choose the drive that you want to install the Linux operating system on (Your USB stick)

How to create a bootable USB stick on Linux

Linux much like windows can use the Universal USB installer
If you run the installer through Wine.
Code
wine /root/Downloads/Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.8.0.exe
Step #1 Choose the Linux operating system of your choice from the menu
Step #2 Locate the ISO of the Linux operating system you have saved on your computer
Step #3 Choose the drive that you want to install the Linux operating system on (Your USB stick)

An alternative linux tool you may use is UNetbootin (Universal Netboot Installer).

How to login to your new operating system on your USB

Step #1 Turn off your PC. Make sure you have the USB stick with your linux operating system plugged in
Step #2 Turn on your PC, press the window boot menu/option key (F12). Wait for the first screen to appear. They key should be right there, usually at the bottom or top. Something like “Press F12 to Choose Device“. Press that key before the screen disappear.
Step #3 When the next menu comes up choose Live System

Congratulations that's it you are finished!
You will now be able to login to your Linux operating system. I was using Kali making this tutorial so my login is
Username: root
Password: toor

Some flavors of linux has different ways of logging in or starting up their graphic user interfaces. Example by typing startx to open the desktop environment for Backtrack R2

I personally use a 32GB USB drive so I have plenty of space to add tools and to save things I absolutely need, with a larger size flash drive you can hold much more.
These little tools are great for those times you don't have your personal PC with all of your own collection of tools. I like to use bootable UBS's because it's just safer when borrowing or sharing a computer without worrying about viruses or keystroke logging. I'm also able to test my friends wireless security and devices without having to carry around a laptop or my desktop.

There are different size linux operating systems and different sized USB thumb drives.
Be sure to look at each before choosing to be sure your chosen operating system is going to fit on your USB stick.
Kali linux - 2.9GB
Parrot security OS - 3.6GB
BackBox - 2.2GB
Samurai Web Testing Framework - 3.8GB
Linux Mint - 1.8GB
Ubuntu - 25GB
Arch Linux - 551MB
There are many different linux choices to choose from the list above is just a short list I put together.

I would suggest skipping the whole step of running unetbootin with wine and just use dd if you're already on Linux. Just do dd if=/path/to/iso of=/path/to/usb bs=1M and you're good to go.

Yes you can use this method as well, I just suggested UBL and unetbootin because it gives the user a big list of different operating systems.

Strange worked when making the tutorial couple days ago. You just have to have the ISO.

The whole point of that feature is to fetch the ISO for you.

I've done this but it was a long time ago, back when backtrack R2 was popular.
Still though very nice guide should help out quite a few members. If I can get a decent enough size flash drive ill probably use this to setup a mint flash drive.

Just take note that, if you plan on installing nvidia driver and cudatoolkit for use with hashcat etc.Do not use usb with persistence, install kali linux into a hard disk drive. otherwise it will blackscreen. :)

You're welcome Haseo™, I think that's a good Idea :)
Is there a hacking toolbox? Or is this just teaching to run a live USB?

If you install OS such as kali, backtrack or arch it comes with all the tools you need.
