Well according to The Hacker News, it was. Can't confirm the authenticity of that because as far as I remember Hackforums has never been defaced except the fake defacement on April Fools day, I think.

I bet few members remember back in 2010 when we were actually going back and forth with Wikipedia because they wouldn't let a "Hack Forums" page exist. I participated in that debate back then and you should be able to access it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:...Hackforums

i just read about this, what actually happened?

I wasn't really around, actually read about it very recently.
But anyway, Omni noticed loads of these accounts being logged into and didn't know why, so he assumed someone had dumped the database because the accounts which were stolen did not have 2FA enabled.

Turns out, someone found a way of logging into accounts, but 2FA did in fact block it, not exactly too sure what the method was, I've seen 2 contradictory statements from Omniscient I think, one suggesting it was simply cracking accounts, and another one suggesting it might be an actual exploit, because I believe Omniscient gave the attacker (a notorious multi at the time) his own Ub3r account with plenty of awards to thank him for telling Omni how he did it.
