I’m native in English and I’m having a hard time studying the Russian language. In particular , I can’t understand that when in Russian it’ll look a certain way and be spelled a certain way but it sounds completely different from what it looks like it sounds.
Ive been trying to learn russian on my own. you should put some time of your day into duolingo. Its helped alot for me.

You have to bear in mind it's a completely seperate alphabet. English doesn't help with learning it like it would for a language like spanish. Some characters look the same and sound the same and some characters look the same and sound different. Just need to drill into your mind what characters make what sound and try forget the english meanings of the characters.
Like н looks like H but it doesn't sound like the english H it sounds like the english n. It's easy as an english person to read нет as Het rather than Nyet.
Russians a pain in the ass of a language because it has multiple ways to depict characters too. Theres typed characters and handwritten characters and some look nothing alike.
start with books and then move on to google translator to learn how a sentence sound like in russia once to learned all these thing start watching russian movie this'll help you a lot
Try to play comp on de dust 2, Russians play only de dust 2 (csgo)

See I understand that , and нет is a perfect example of something I do understand. But the fact that “dog” has no “д” in it makes me feel puzzled.

I've also been learning Russian and made a few friends in Russia. It is very different than English, the sounds, grammar etc is a lot different. My best advice is to first learn the alphabet so you can at least pronounce Russian words even if you don't understand them, however, after that, you should start learning vocabulary and really make sure you work on grammar as well. Try to meet some people that are native speakers, there are lots of apps out there for that.
It's a tough language to learn but you can learn any language if you have the motivation and put in the effort.

да!
You need to pretty much throw out English and realize it's a completely different language and it's like you're a newborn baby learning all over again 😏
