2 nights ago I was pulled over around 11pm after seeing a movie with my girlfriend. The cop walked up too me and asked for my ID, which then I proceed to ask why I got pulled over. He then proceeds to say the most stupid comment, "I don't need to tell you, GIVE ME YOUR ID SIR." I then proceed to tell him that he can't just pull me over if he has no probable cause. The officer then proceeds to ask my gf for her ID and at that point I told her not to hand her ID over even though she was about too.
This cop then tells me "don't be a smart ass sir, listen to your girlfriend and let me see your id." I refused for a good 35 minutes and I guess he had a call up for another case, and before he left he said, "next time I won't be so nice sir." I asked him for name and he walked away and said its on my badge.... I was very pissed!
I filled a complaint form and called my attorney the next day because I found him threatening.
I thought LAPD and cops were suppose to protect and serve. 😟 😟
I don't know much about the rules in your country since I'm not from there but if he only asked for your ID you could have shown it to him. It's okay I think for you to show the ID but if he asks for it (like get it from you) it's not okay for me, but if he only wants to see my ID, I'll ask for his badge and let him see my ID.

He just had no reason to want to see my ID and it was dumb of me not to ask for his badge number and name at the start.

Yeah, it was stupid for him to not give you the reason why he asked for your ID. He could have just politely said, "Hello sir, I'm xxx an LAPD officer and I will have to ask for your ID because xxx, thank you.

this here is a fear/scare tactic, DON'T EVER FOLD. once they scare you, they win. it's a psychological thing, trust me. cops are really pussy and insecure. they are trained to be 'stoic' and act hard while they ride around scared 24/7 that someone is going to pop them when they commit a traffic stop. have you ever heard in your town of 'bars for pigs'? they all go to 1 certain spot because they know they are not SAFE in a regular bar.
ALWAYS be a smart ass. you have rights.
Good to know that I wasn't the only one who thought the police officer was out of line!

See I would've given him my ID if he had a probable cause, but I had a hunch he was just bullying me and had no reason what so ever.
Wow that's messed up, I've never had situation like this. He sounded like he was just looking for something to get you on.

As a brown person, fuck all of that shit. You best believe I'm handing over some ID if he asks for it. Last thing I need is 14 warning shots to the back.

I'm on the tanner side being half asian, half white, but haha, I would've handed it over if he was polite and had a reason to pull me over.
Why not just give him your ID? Its a standard procedure (USA)
I reread your post 3 times and to me you are 110% the problem in this situation. If you had just handed over your license you would have been on your way within 10 minutes. Instead you decided to throw your weight around (probably trying to impress your gf) and waste everyone's time.
There are definitely a lot of asshole cops but every time I've come across police they always look at me, smile and ask me how I'm doing. I haven't had a bad experience yet.
It's all about how you go about it too, people (including cops) will get aggressive if they feel like you're starting to get aggressive or if you make someone uncomfortable. Best bet, stay calm, get his name and badge number and you will have your day in court to explain yourself.

I'm definitely not trying to impress my girlfriend, the main reason I didn't is because they had no reason. I'm not just going to be a blind sheep and listen to whatever someone with a badge and gun says...

I think I was pretty calm.. I greeted him and asked why I was pulled over, and luckily he didn't give me a ticket... I mean I don't know what ticket he could've possibly given me anyways.

You should've recorded it. Not calling you a liar but most people (the courts) won't believe this happened without some evidence. They are supposed to tell you why they stopped you and it doesn't make sense he just left the scene when you wouldn't give your info.
I went on Google and searched "do you have to identify yourself to a police officer in California"?
This was the result:
Police cannot force you to show ID without just cause, so they cannot arrest you for simply refusing to identify yourself. California does not have what is called a “Stop and Identify” or “Papers Please” statute that requires you to produce identification to the police when asked. Just because police ask to see your ID doesn’t mean you have to show it.
Now although you did not have to show your ID. I agree with "THE NORTH FACE" when they said " If you had just handed over your license you would have been on your way within 10 minutes."
