Tips for Applying to Groups and Crews
by Spaark
I thought I'd write up this thread for those who are genuinely interested in joining a usergroup for whatever reason. I've personally experienced, as leader of Wolfpack and Samaritans that particularly new users struggle to successfully get into groups due to the same stupid mistakes. Here are my 3 tips to successfully joining groups or crews on this forum. I'll be referring to both Crews and Usergroups as Usergroups because my brain just isn't that big.
1. Understanding Usergroups
A usergroup, at time of publishing this costs around $1600-$2600 to purchase. In addition you must pay Omniscient $250 to have the group transferred to your name after receiving approval to own it in the first place. They're not cheap and there is a limited number of them. If you don't value the group you're applying to, just don't apply. It might be cool to have a userbar and such, but it's very easy to tell which members are interested in being apart of the community and which just want to sell more ebooks. While obviously every group is unique, it's your job as an applicant to get to know the group before you apply. Get in touch with members that are already in the group you're interested in, make friends and get familiar with what you want to achieve. It's basic networking and it applies to life just as much as Hackforums. Usergroups are commonly very personal and close knitted groups of friends, you should respect that and also use it to your advantage.
2a. Writing an Application - All About You
One of the most frustrating things about the forum for me at the moment is processing applications. If you've taken the first part of advice above, it isn't very hard. But a lot of people are increasingly fucking braindead in their applications. Unless you're seriously involved with the people approving or denying the applications you should write more than one fucking line per application question. Futhermore, if you're genuinely interested in joining a group and think that you can just write 50 words and catch the interest of a HF Group Leader you'd be kidding yourself. When there's an application template, follow it. But don't be shy to get creative and elaborate on the points you make in your application. You don't need to do pages full of information about yourself, but you should try differentiate yourself from the likeminded average HF Member.
2b. Writing an Application - Requirements and things NOT to do
As all groups are unique and so are their entry requirements. Usually present in a Recruitment Thread are the requirements for applicants. They're often not very difficult to meet. Sometimes I get users trying to apply to Wolfpack who I swear don't even read the Recruitment Thread, they skip straight to the bottom and copy paste an App. It's the most obvious sign that you're not a quality member and generally only takes 2mins of reading to avoid. When writing the Application, use proper English and fill in the right information. Hint: If it says <YOURNAME> or something similar, that's where you put your fucking name. English is the primary language of the forum, I understand there's a large group of members who haven't learnt English as their first language, that's fine. But if you're an active member you've probably met someone who does have a good grasp on the language who could potentially help you clean it up. Avoid using abreviatons and slang in Applications. You're trying to sell yourself to someone who has a ~$2000+ investment in the forum, a bit of respect and due diligence goes a long way. An additional tip, don't be that guy who applies through UserCP. It's the worst first impression you could probably make.
3. Afterwards
Lets say you've applied to groups around the forum and nobody has gotten back to you after many days, perhaps weeks. It's time to reflect. Go back to the beginning and consider where you went wrong. Does your profile look like it belongs to a 6 yearold? Was your Application written by a Nigerian scammer? Are you known by anyone within the group? Don't whine in the recruitment thread about how you've not been accepted. If anything seek feedback and try again in an improved manner. Genuine interest is what leaders want and if they don't give you the response you're looking for maybe you should consider finding something else to participate in within the forum. HF is a great place to waste time, you can find something to do around here.
TLDR: if ur application take 30s to read, it'll be read while scrolling and we wont even catch your fucking name.
Time to shout out some of the morons who inspired this thread with their garbage applications. Spoiler (Click to View)
