MacBook Pro 16

I'm currently looking to get the new MacBook Pro 16. I need some assistance on what configuration to go with because you can customize at checkout. Here is a little background on myself. I'm a software/web developer, currently getting a Masters in Computer Science, and am starting a career as a web/software developer. I'll be using virtual machines to code and do testing on Windows, plus running VSCode, Eclipse, Photoshop, etc. Based on that, I'm not really sure what configuration to go with. Here are my configurations that I can work with:

Configuration 1
- 2.4GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz
- 32GB memory
- AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory
- 1TB SSD Storage
Price: ~ $3,199

Configuration 2
- 2.3GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.8GHz
- 32GB memory
- AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory
- 1TB SSD Storage
Price: ~ $3,049

Configuration 3
- 2.3GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.8GHz
- 64GB memory
- AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory
- 1TB SSD Storage
Price: ~ $3,409

Configuration 4
- 2.3GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.8GHz
- 32GB memory
- AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory
- 2TB SSD Storage
Price: ~ $3,409

I can't figure out which configuration I should really go for based on my background. Any help would be great.

Hey buddy,

Nice gift for yourself ;) My advice will depend about what you are planing to do with it in details, take a look below

3th - In my opinion the third configuration with 64GB of RAM is pretty overkill, unless you are expecting to run 6 or 8 VM at the same time, with 32GB you will easily be able to run 2 or 3 VM with many programs and tabs opened, without any lags.

4th - The forth configuration with its 2TB SSD sounds maybe too much for me, however it depends as above if you are planing to run several VM at the same time ? For this point I rather prefer to use Cloud Services to store my data instead of putting everything on my laptops, much more secure (but use NAS to backup my data on my desktop)

So for me the real question is between the 1st and 2nd configurations, not sure it's worth to spend 150$ for 0.1 and 0.2 more Ghz. I would choose the 2nd one.

However it's up to you, what do you think about the points I emphasized ?

Thank you for your input. My top two options were configuration one and two. $150 for up to 0.2 more GHz is definitely steep. Do you think I would really ever notice a difference in performance between the two?

Not sure you will feel the slight difference between 4.8 and 5.0 Ghz, besides I'm also thinking about the fact that 4.8 Ghz is not an easy thing to cool, so imagine with 5 Ghz, even more in a laptop 😗

You do not have to choose based on 1 feedback, I encourage you to wait and see about other members. Make you own point of view by browsing the internet as well :)

No. Apple doesn't tell you that the boost clock is heavily dialed down after a minute or so of use. The sustained performance is pretty much the same.

Thank you both for your input. I think I'm going to go with configuration 2. One more question though, do you think it would be worth getting the AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 4GB of GDDR6 memory or 8GB?

Mac fucking suck, you can just vm a mac and give it better specs then the original macs which are just overpriced trash. but spend like 1500 on a good pc to run a linux hypervisor build. run windows and mac on a linux machine, if you want a video of what im talking about lmk

looking for work
Did you buy it?

I would agree and say config 2 is going to be the best value. It's doubtful that you would notice a great deal of difference in the GHz figures, there's a good amount of storage and memory to get started too. Personally, I think it's a good machine to start a career in web/software developer as you have the added benefit of the graphics/design capability a mac has compared to competitors. Once you get started with your career I'm sure you'll figure out your ideal config and have more money to spend but this is a good start.
