Custom Build

The MOBO's CPU LED lights up - even after CPU repair

Hey,

so I started to do a custom build a while back. Everything went well, but unfortunately the PC didn't boot and the CPU LED on the Motherboard
lit up, indicating the CPU would be defective.

So I got the CPU replaced poped in the new one and.... same problem!

Does this mean the Motherboard is defective?
Since the manufacturer replaced the initial CPU (which they would only do if it was broken, right?) does this mean the Motherboard keeps breaking my CPUs?
How likely is it that I got a broken CPU twice in a row? Are there any other possible causes than a damaged motherboard?

I double checked the CPU alignment with the socket obviously.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.. really don't wanna send this all back, again. 😧

Full Build:

Mobo: MSI 450 Tomahawk
CPU: Ryzen 5 2600
RAM: Corsair VengeanceLPX DDR4 2666Mhz 8GB
Power: Corsair TX550M
GFX: MSI GeForce 1050Ti Aero
+ 1SSD
+1 HDD

CPUs are very hard to kill, and it's very unlikely that you got 2 DOA CPUs. I would try another board.
Before you do that, I would double check your power connections to the board itself. I've seen people try and plug PCIe power into the CPU power in the top left of the board.

Hello buddy,

Check that all your cables are well plugged, had the same issue, forgot to plug the CPU cable on the mother board.

I'll do that, thanks for your help!

Hey,
I think I did that already last time, but it seems to be the likeliest case. Unfortunately I'm away for the next few days so I can't check right now.
Thanks for you help!

Hey, sorry to tag you like this but the issue has not been solved.

I double checked the cables, they seem fine.

I've tried a different PSU which had no effect (CPU LED lights up).

Unfortunately I only have one other MOBO but I can't get the CPU cooler off and since that is my main PC I'm not keen on ripping it off and destroying something.
Which means I can't test the CPU in a different setup. Remember this my second CPU since returned the first one for being DOA.

Do you think there's any way the MOBO is defect? And incorrectly shows the CPU as broken?
Could it be anything else apart from CPU/MOBO?

Since I can't really do any more testing and the warrenty might be running out soon, would you recommend:
Returning the CPU
Returning the MOBO
Returning both

Thank you for your help! I'm just a hardware noobie and the whole COVID situation isn't making this any easier too :P

I would check your CPU connector from the PSU first. It's hard to see, but I think you have the clip/latch on the connector facing downwards, but I'm 90% sure it should be the other way (ie. upwards).
If that doesn't work, your only option besides straight up returning the board, is trying it in your other board.
When you unscrew the cooler, you have to push down pretty hard while unscrewing it. Just unscrewing it won't work.

The connectors were correct, facing away as you described.

I did manage to get the old CPU out of the board, however it seems to have molten itself onto the cooler. I'm gonna try to get it off with a hair dryer and some 96% alcohol. The screws weren't the issue, it's just really molten together 🙁

The new CPU (in the old board) does work. When first booting and checking it Speccy reported 80° Celsius + (~ 176F). After some investigation this seems to be a problem with Speccy since BIOS, CPU-Z and HWMonitor report normal numbers (30-40° Celsius, 86-104° F).

Which means the new CPU is working and the Motherboard is the issue. Until I get my CPU of off the cooler I can't test the old CPU on the new MOBO to double confirm.

But this confirms the broken part can realistically only be the MOBO, right?

So thank you for your kind help!

Like I said earlier, CPUs are usually really hard to kill, so there's a good chance that your old CPU works as well and that it is the board that is dead.
