Quote:Dumped by his girlfriend, emotionally shattered college student Kazuya Kinoshita attempts to appease the void in his heart through a rental girlfriend from a mobile app. At first, Chizuru Mizuhara seems to be the perfect girl with everything he could possibly ask for: great looks and a cute, caring personality.
Upon seeing mixed opinions on her profile after their first date, and still tormented by his previous relationship, Kazuya believes that Chizuru is just playing around with the hearts of men and leaves her a negative rating. Angry at her client's disrespect towards her, Chizuru reveals her true nature: sassy and temperamental, the complete opposite of Kazuya's first impression. At that very moment, Kazuya receives news of his grandmother's collapse and is forced to bring Chizuru along with him to the hospital.
Although it turns out to be nothing serious, his grandmother is ecstatic that Kazuya has finally found a serious girlfriend, which had always been her wish. Unable to tell her the truth, Kazuya and Chizuru are forced into a fake relationship—acting as if they are truly lovers.

It's highly recommended to keep your posts in spoilers, but there is no way to enforce that since this is a discussion thread and anything goes. Don't get upset if you read something and you aren't up-to-date with the current episodes.
As for me, I shall use spoiler codes for the first three episodes. After that, I will not use the spoiler code anymore.
I pretty much did the thing where I summarized the whole anime, so there are spoilers in here if you are interested in knowing what the anime is about.
Rent-A-Girlfriend was the anime I was looking forward to watching the most this season. I mean, look at the cover art. If you love cute anime girls, what isn't there to love about this anime?
Well, here we are, the anime is finally here. After watching the first episode, I was excited to see what was to come. It wasn't what I was expecting at all. Honestly, I felt like this anime was aimed more towards the seinen audience (young adults) than the shounen audience. I guess if you are 15-18 you'd enjoy this too, but I feel like if you are 20-25 you'll understand this anime even more. Hell, it's an anime, anyone can understand it, what I'm trying to get at is the "vibe" of the anime.
We are met with Kazuya Kinoshita, a college student who gets dumped by his very first girlfriend, which I believe is Nanami Mami. Out of sadness and horny-ness (Yes, you read that correctly), he discovers an application on his phone that is called "Rent-A-Girlfriend." The first girl he stumbles upon is Chizuru Ichinose, which is already the best girl so far.
The application allows you to rent-a-girlfriend for 5000 yen an hour. Which is strange, considering that he spent a lot of time with Ichinose he dropped a lot of money on her. Anyways, their first date went really well. They went to the aquarium, they went out on a lunch date, and they even held hands on the way to dropping her off to the train station. After arriving home to give her a review, (which you can do after the date to let people know how your experience was - obviously -so other people can see if they are interested in dating that specific girl) he noticed in other people's reviews that of course, her attitude throughout the whole date was fake and she's putting on a persona since she's "working." Other people who have dated her have reported in the review that her "sucker punch" (meaning the way to keep getting you to 'rent' her again) is a cute smile and holding your hand when least expecting it. Someone with no experience with girls would absolutely love that, and it's not a bad way to get some money.
Fast-forward, Kazuya decides to go on another date with her. Upon doing so, he calls her out on this saying that she is a fake and doesn't actually care about the people she's dating, she's just doing it for money. Well, yeah, duh, that's like the only-fans phenomenon. You simps think the girls care about you? Lol, they just want your money. Yeah sure they might be glad that you creeps are "enjoying" their content, but in the end, it's about the money. Yeah, I just called you only-fans simps out.
After the confrontation, Kazuya gets a phone call from someone saying that his grandma is in the hospital. Since Chizuru is still on the clock, she tags along. While at the hospital stuff goes on blah blah, and Kazuya and Chizuru have to lie that they are dating.
Anyways, let's talk about the ending of the episode since I'm rambling. Chizuru sees Kazuya on campus. I guess they go to the same college, but when you see her she's wearing a disguise. It should be obvious that she's doing it so that she can live a real-life and not have to worry about people gossiping that they found her on a dating app. Also, if you pay attention to the first date, you'll notice she did say she's a college student too, however, that completely flew past my head.
I'm looking forward to how this anime pans out. I know we are going to leave off somewhere after or directly at the spot we left off this episode when episode two is release. If you take a look at the artwork of the anime, you'll notice the blonde girl is Kazuya's ex, the brunette is Chizuru, and the black hair and redhead we haven't met yet. I'm wondering if this will turn into some sort of harem.
Also, I thought Chizuru's voice actress was Rie Takahashi, but she wasn't. The good news is that Rie is in this anime and she voices the red-head!
The quality of this anime was nicely done. I like the "raw gritty" feeling of the background. You know when I review I like to say that. Basically, the "unclean" "looks like it's drawn by crayon" type feel. I really liked that in this anime. The character designs in curtain scenes were meh, but the times when we needed to focus on the characters it was really nice. One thing I disliked was the constant usage of weird faces. I guess that's a trend among comedy shounen anime or something. I know that in KonoSuba Kazuma made some really weird faces to add to the comedic aspect of things.
I noticed that this anime in terms of pace was slow. But it's not boring. You'll be entertained. Lastly, I want to mention that before I said someone who is a young adult would relate to this. Yeah, teenagers would too. But I did say that. There are a few references in terms of lewd behavior as I feel they are really trying to connect with the youth on this one if you know what I mean? There's also the usage of Twitter and other known apps that we are familiar with, that way they can make this anime as "shounen" or "seinen" as possible.

I think they might stick to the shounen cliches to boost popularity, so I don't think the future episodes will be mainly for the shounen audience, since the characters are in college, but hey, it might just work. That art was mesmerizing and I'd like to see where the anime goes.
I don't think I'll drop it unless it gets ridiculous, and for an anime like this I don't think I'll pick up the manga.

There are three anime on my list at the moment, The Misfit of Demon King Academy, this, and The God of Highschool I am closely monitoring to see if they will be my "anime" of the season. Of course, not everything has aired yet, but from the anime, I've seen so far those are the ones I am most interested in.
I'm interested in seeing what the next episode for this anime will be like.
Episode 2.
Definitely an interesting episode to watch. Some drama and awkwardness towards the end. We learn in the ending preview of the last episode that Chizuru goes to the same college as Kazuya. Soon after that, we learned they also live in the same apartment building and are neighbors!
Kazuya's grandmother wants to come over to visit and he insists that Kazuya invite Chizuru over. Sadly, the app that allows you to rent-a-girlfriend only allows you to make a contract with a girl a week ahead of time, so unfortunately Kazuya isn't able to "rent" Chizuru.
After a short discussion, Chizuru just told him to stop being a wimp, man up, and tell his grandmother the truth. I can agree at times Kazuya is a dunce but other times (which is a very small percentage so far) he can have a good side to him. I just think that he's always thinking with his d*ck instead of his brain. I can never tell when he's crying or jerking-off with the number of tissues he has in the trash can.
Kazuya's grandmother comes over and he plans on telling her the truth. Chizuru goes outside for whatever reason, I guess the door to the outside patio or whatever it's called in an apartment, the section where there's a rail and you can sit outside from your apartment if you wish, that thing, is magically open for both Chizuru and Kazuya, and she overhears the conversation. After that, she decides to come into Kazuya's house making the excuse she was cooking dinner.
First, why was the door left unlocked? Second, if she was walking in with a pan, don't you think she'd live pretty close? I guess this part here I'm overthinking but why wouldn't the grandma question where CHizura lives, especially since she's a girl walking alone at night with a hot pot and nothing to protect herself if any sort of danger were to occur. Of course, she wouldn't guess that she lives so close, but I would have definitely questioned Chizuru.
We meet Mami officially in this episode. There's something about her that I dislike. I feel like she's hiding something from Kazuya. She might be a yandere type, but after hearing what she said to Kazuya while at dinner with everyone a yandere would never do that.
It's nice to see Chizuru looking out for Kazuya, even if it was because she was "rented" for the night. This here might make you pity Kazuya and say that you don't like him as a character because he can't stand up for himself and that I do agree. He should have definitely said something.
In the next episode, we'll already be getting a beach episode. We can see Mami and Kazuya in a secluded spot so I already know something dramatic is going to happen!
I remember reading the manga of this probably a year ago or so, I thought it was gonna be some dark drama or something, but it was surprisingly super light-hearted, still, not that entertaining for me, probably good for people who just watched anime though.

It wasn't as good as I was hoping it would be, but it keeps me busy every Friday. 😁
Episode three:
The third episode was very painful to watch. I don't like to use cringe and I wouldn't say that it was cringe, however, it just irked me watching this.
Kazuya is an annoying character. He's a loser who can't get over Mami, and it's very annoying how tight she has a leash on him. I understand he can't get over her, but he's dug himself into such a big grave, and he is only making it worse by not only lying to his family but now his friends too.
We get a beach episode very early on, but compared to other "ecchi" anime, this beach scene wasn't that great. Honestly, that might be a good thing. We get more focus on the drama than fanservice. Kazuya goes with the group of friends he went to see at the izakaya from the last episode. Everyone but Chizuru is going.
Before you know it, Chizuru meets Kazuya and the gang at the beach, and this is where the drama starts. First, I want to talk about Mami. I'm not sure who I hate more, Kazuya, or Mami. I'd say Mami mostly because her influence is why Kazuya is what he is. She's clearly a messed-up yandere psychopath and she's up to something. You can tell through her dialogue and tone of voice that she's up to no good.
As I mentioned before, it pains me to see how whipped Kazuya is. I feel like if Kazuya fully committed to Chizuru and stopped being a whiny little b*tch, they would actually be a good couple. As a character herself, I don't really like Mami at all. And it's not even because of her attitude. I just don't think she's a cute character. I'll continue rooting for Chizuru so my bias is strong with her.
I feel like the subtitles are the reason why this anime is a pain to watch. The nuance of things is "translated" in a way that people of our generation would think is funny. I think the subs are trying to pull something off like this if you know the meme:
![[Image: puJlVjk.png]](https://i.imgur.com/puJlVjk.png)
For this anime specifically with how it's aimed towards the youth, I feel like knowing Japanese would be much better than the subtitles given.
We still haven't met the other girls on the cover yet and I'm wondering what their influence on Kazuya is going to be like. A friend told me that Kazuya is just going to get worse and worse and that upsets me, but it is what it is!
In terms of pacing, I felt this episode was a bit slower than the last two. It felt too long and slow.
In the end, Mami calls Kazuya to a secluded area and they end up kissing. Ah, now he's really digging a deeper grave. Although Chizuru is faking the girlfriend bit because she's getting paid, I feel like she's going to get her feelings hurt eventually.
Do you guys think I should start this one?

I have a lot of frustration watching it. The MC is very annoying and my friend who read the manga says he only gets worse. At the moment, I have given this a 6/10. I don't give final ratings/list my rating on MAL until the anime is completely finished, but during the airing, I like to have a general rating, of course, I'm sure like everyone else.
Part of me wants to say give it a try, while the other half of me tells me to not recommend it. I know that's not an answer lol. Ugh, if you are fine with an irritable MC, I'd give it a try. I'd say around episode 3 (the latest episode) is when he starts to annoy me.
He can also be annoying in episode 2.

Edit: wrong post lmao.
This is a pretty good series so far. The Main character REALLY gives off cuck vibes though, which is very unpleasant.

I dislike him and I also dislike Mami since I know she has some sort of weird motive with the MC.
the mc is suck a shitbag that it makes the anime good. I much prefer Chizuru in her twin braids mode than her gf mode.

I like her in girlfriend mode more, but I guess it comes down to preferences in the end. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Episode 4.
I thought this was a decent episode. A lot of people are talking about Kibe's actions and how they thought he did a good job punching Kazuya back into reality. Ugh, this anime is still irritating to watch at times, but this episode wasn't too bad. I hate that weird face Kazuya makes whenever he's blushing or whatever the f*ck he's doing. It just makes him so punchable.
He needs to commit to one girl or the other. It's clear that since hanging out with Chizuru that she is slightly starting to get feelings for him. Whether it's because of work or not, you can see that their relationship is far better than Mami and Kazuya's was. I think that Kazuya is thinking more about Mami because he's just trying to get laid. Even Kibe understands that Mami is leading him on, and as omniscient viewers, we know that she's a crazy b*tch.
The kissing scene wasn't as intense as I thought it was going to be. For whatever reason, Mami said that she couldn't hold back. I still don't know if she's doing this to lure Kazuya still or if she truly likes him back. If she really loved him the way he does, she would have never broken up with him in the first place. This is why I think she's so fishy. Other than the fact that she gives off a sadistic/narcissistic vibe, she's just an irritable character.
Kazuya and Chizuru's grandmothers are getting discharged from the hospital, which is good. I'll go more into that later. Kazuya and Chizuru go on a ferry thanks to tickets that Kibe bought them. For a while, way before getting on the ship, Chizuru felt like she was sick. There's no indication of how she became sick. Maybe from swimming, maybe from the food, they ate, regardless, she falls off the ferry and goes into the ocean. Maybe from being so sick, she was going to throw up, but I've never seen someone go overboard like that before lol.
Kazuya for once mans up and does the right thing and jumps into the water to save her. I think that's the greatest thing he's done so far in the whole anime. No hesitation drops his phone and jumps straight into the water. Of course, any normal human being with feelings would probably do the same, even if they didn't know the person. Plus, they weren't even that far out in the sea and the water wasn't even that bad that I'm sure anyone could have easily jumped in the water. But what do I know?
Now, fast forward, in the ending preview, it looks like Chizuru is fine and Kazuya is knocked out. I think it's funny that he is the one that passes out and not her so in the end, she saves him. The next episode will be an onsen episode so I'm sure there will be a little bit of ecchi fanservice. Wee see Kazuya's grandma in the onsen with Chizuru so I'm hoping that it's the grandparents and them and not the friend group because honestly, they make things awkward. Despite being a supporting character, Kazuya's grandma is funny.
I'll say it again but we have yet to see the other girls on the cover of this anime. We are about to hit the fifth episode next week. I'm wondering when we'll see them.
Episode 5.
I'm surprised how well episode 5 was. I enjoyed it. The first half wasn't as great as the second though. The second half of the episode was the spotlight of this episode in my opinion, and it made it the best episode so far in my opinion.
In the beginning half of the episode, we get to see Kazuya saving Chizuru. It wasn't as dramatic as they made the ending of episode four, but this was the turning point for Kazuya, and since he didn't realize it yet, it makes the second half even better. I wouldn't say their encounter on the small island was anything special, but they had their first "kiss," although it was just Chizuru applying CPR to Kazuya, still, they touched lips. The majority of the people browsing this forum aren't 10, so they aren't getting giddy which is good. Personally, I didn't look at this a romantic type thing, rather she was doing the right thing to save Kazuya, but of course, to drag in the viewers they may have made it a little bit more dramatic than needed. However, they did a good job with it.
Mami is still the devil in my opinion and her influence on Kazuya is still strong. Her attitude at the pool and the tone of her voice is aggravating. Her voice actress is doing a great job portraying the emotion needed for Mami as a character and because of that, it makes me hate Mami even more. Very rarely will I hate a seiyuu because they are just doing their jobs, and it is the character in the end that I hate, but there are times when the seiyuu just aggravates me. In this case, she doesn't.
The scene where Kazuya is in his rooming doing you know what was a bit unexpected, and I've never seen that in an ecchi anime before. Although we didn't see anything, we got a vivid idea of what was going on, and outside of hentai, I've never seen a producer do this before. This is where the switch flipped in his mind and he started to fall for Chizuru. Which I think is acceptable. Although he's paying her to be with him, she's done far more things than Mami has ever done. We still don't know what Mami's motives are. I don't know how her narcissist type comes into play here.
It's a bit weird how he'll flip through who he likes when he's doing you know what, but regardless, I'm glad he's starting to fall for Chizuru as from the start I've always liked her more. The second half transition was a bit weird and I felt like they could have done it a little better. Also, Kazuya's parents look so old that they could be the same age as his grandma. Just want to point that out.
I had a feeling that Ichinose, Chizuru's grandmother was going to be invited to the hot spring. I think we got a preview of it in the last episode, but I could be wrong. Regardless, if Ichinose was going to go, of course, Chizuru would be there too. I find it cute that their grandparents are trying so hard to set them up (despite dating you know what I mean) and they are a funny bunch.
Both Chizuru and Kazuya are still digging their graves further and further. They keep saying that they are going to tell their grandparents that they are going to break up, but never fall through with it. I sort of understand it though. They've been digging their graves for so long and just telling them it was an act would be so weird and I don't even think they would believe them. Maybe if they told their friends it would be a different story. They might not believe them at first, but with this day and age, if you were to explain it through the app that's a different story.
The end was the best and seeing Chizuru and Kazuya getting closer puts a smile on my face. He wasn't annoying for once in this episode and the two of them were really cute. In the preview for the next episode, we are introduced to another girl on the cover art, the one with the blue ribbon and black hair. After that, we still need to be introduced to one more girl, the redhead. I'm curious about what the next episode will be about because it's titled "Girlfriend and Girlfriend." We are definitely left in a cliffhanger!
Episode 6.
A funny and interesting episode this week. I don't have any complaints. We finally get to meet the girl with the blue ribbon in her hair, Ruka. However, I am pretty sure she is still in high school, which I find weird considering she's "dating" Kazuya's friend, Shun, who is in college. I could be wrong about what grade she is in, but the first time we saw her was in a school uniform, and I am pretty sure colleges in Japan don't require one. She does a look a little bit younger than Chizuru too.
No way Shun legitly started to date this girl. I guess you could say it's obvious that the girl Shun is "dating" is a rental one. We can also conclude this because she brings this up to Chizuru, asking if she's one. There is no proof to back this up just yet, and through the previews of the next episode, I don't see us finding out about it just yet.
Curious what we'll see in the next episode!
