Am I missing something -- Why are BTC network fees so high?

I currently use BlockChain as my bitcoin wallet and transaction fees are ridiculously high. I think sending $3 BTC somewhere costs like $12 in fees.

Am I doing something wrong (I haven't touched cryptos in about a year or so)? Should I be using a different wallet?

I use Atomic Wallet and it lets me adjust my fee. I usually send at a $1 fee and it’s confirmed within the hour.

I really appreciate the advice. Do you know if there is a mobile version for this?
Use bluewallet for mobile , best wallet and you keep the private keys and set the fee for the transaction.

You can download TrustWallet. You can also try the wallet mentioned in the post above but I've never used that one.

I'm not entirely sure if you can adjust fees with TrustWallet. But I'm pretty sure you can. Exodus is another good option but idk if they have a mobile wallet.
$12? I was paying $1 in fees yesterday. Maybe you can adjust the fees on your wallet? Look into Lightning wallets like Muun or Phoenix.

I’m not too familiar with setting fees in terms of sat/B or what this even means haha. What’s a reasonable fee per byte to have a transaction send within the hour?

I'm not sure about this one. Maybe someone else can answer that. I'd like to know as well. I've been sending at around 7 sat/B for the last month or so.
Ethereum is worse for me, especially in Trust Wallet. Fees are like $20+ and for some reason when you try to swap its like $80 gas fees.

Do you just send with the minimum fee displayed there? Currently 1.00 sat/vB

1. This side the recent mined blocks and how much sat fees you needed to get your tx included in that block. you can see last 3-4 or as many blocks you want to see congestion.

2.This block is currently at avg of 4sat fee, so if you pay 10sat fee you in 1st in line just for example , you can click on the block to see tx with low sat to high range. Pic below:

3. Now one block can handle only a certain no of txs so if new tx with high sat fee keeps getting added, they will be prioritized according to there fees and if its more than yours, your tx will sent to 2nd waiting to be mined block , if more congestion people will pay higher fees and it will go more back and hence the more wait.

I hope this made some sense, lol.
