Apologies if this is in the wrong section and should be under hardware. Of the side hustles on this site, crypto mining is one that I'm interested in, but I have some questions about it I was wondering if someone would mind helping me with.
I've watched a few guides, and a couple of questions I haven't seen answers to (that I understood anyway):
- Do you need a lot of gpus to mine, or is it just desirable to have a lot? What I mean is, if you have 10 cards that mine, say, $1 a day, that's $10. But if you had just one card, would it still mine $1? Or would it much more likely mine nothing, because the hashrate is too low?
- Can you use multiple different brands of cards in the same rig? Could you have 10 different manufacturers in the same rig, and mining software would just deal with it? Or do they have to be of a type/speed etc?
Also buying the cards, if I was going to do this (which I might, hence asking questions) I wouldn't want to buy off ebay or facebook, but are there compelling reasons not to buy from reputable hardware suppliers (beyond the price)? I'm just curious, if I was going to do it I'd buy a card and experiment with setting it up, I'm interested in this kind of thing, but I'm just wondering whether I might be better off spending my free time learning about NFTs or something. Thanks.

No, you can immune with one GPU. Some pools have a minimum withdrawal amount so having more cards will let you reach it faster.

Yes you can have different brands in the same rig

The cards are expensive and I’m not too sure how much longer mining will last. > don’t know if you’ll be able to ROI

Oh yeah, that was another question I had, is whether this kind of thing will last, I don't mind investing a bit but obviously if it's going to become infeasible in 6 months I won't bother.
Thanks very much for response. Also, what's a 'pool'? Is that a few of you pooling together to increase hashrate or something?

You join a pool to help increase odds of mining a block aka get that reward together then split the rewards. If you tried to solo mine it might take you a couple decades to mine a block if not ever.
So, how others have been doing it for years is, buy a card, get ROI and buy another, and keep going. If you want to get into mining, I would suggest you look at helium miners. Pre-order some from bobcat (takes up to 20 weeks to ship because of backorders, but they ROI fast).
GPU mining is great, especially if you're planning to stack the asset you mine and hold for awhile. Make your gains 2-4x. I've been mining ETH all year with my gaming PC when I leave. I think stake the ETH that I mine because I don't want to touch it for a very long time, but I'm also gaining more ETH slowly but passively from staking it.

Well depending on the strength of the GPU you are planning to use, with single RTX 3090 mining full day ETH that's about 120+MH per day with a single card but its a huge investment and really expensive. That one card equals about 6.30 USD profit per day without the cost of electricity depending on your region.
The whole operation is really expensive in total and it requires lot of attention and care for humidity and temperature because you don't want your GPU/s to go ham and cheese too soon.

Not sure about that but from my experience there are plenty of software which can mine multiple AMD and Nvidia cards at the same time so why not.
It all comes to proxy technology I think.

Well it's always better to buy brand new stuff from factory and have papers of guarantee for them then buy some brick from Ebay.
I hope this helped you at least a bit to get the general picture. Shouldn't be so hard if you want to invest one GPU for starting to experiment!
