If I had to go with a drastic new look, I would take some hybrid of hackernews, reddit, github, and bring in either a Facebook or LinkedIn style newsfeed as a primary page/feature of the new theme.
It would be light or dark theme with a quick toggle in the corner of every page & if I had to choose between Windows vs Mac/iphone vs Android themes I guess I'd go with a MacOS-ish style, a nice small font family/size/weight, and try to implement some sort of nested post UX similar to reddit where you can see replies (quoted posts) directly under the original, and open/collapse diff comment trees.
It would be similar to github because I think it would be cool to have the user profiles show top threads / posts & stats similar to how git profiles show pinned repos.
The hackernews reference would be to trending posts, and again - the nested comments feature. The theme would implement 'full view' (traditional mybb style) but also 'list view' (more like HN / Ycombinator or reddit, or hell - craigslist).
The FB theme style inspiration would be for global site convo bubble / popout chat window, as well as instant msging for users & an online users list like oldschool Facebook before Messenger.
The LinkedIn inspiration stems from the idea of how it brings in events - when someone is promoted or has an event, LinkedIn does a good job of showing it on newsfeeds. The theme's feed would feature users who join groups, upgrade to L33t/ub3r/etc, become Staff, gain Awards, break certain stat records, etc.
I like your ideas, that sound great. I personally like a N-o-r-d colorscheme.

I've had a lot of time to think about it and I've made my own custom themes before, as well as actual forum software (without nearly as many features).
I really do hope there's a "forum 2.0" phase where it's a mix of social apps & traditional forums.

Like I said in my previous reply, I feel like I'm initially partial to old school looks, but it would be cool if anyone whipped up a couple of examples they felt were have decent at least and that had a newer vibe to them. Guess I'm just curious to know if they'd strike me well. Obviously can't much know without seeing something.
If we're changing the colors of HF in a snap of a finger..
...it's getting blacked out. You know like when you apply the dark theme to windows, or other apps? Yah, same thing would apply to HF. It would get its "Dark Mode", except it would be permanent and no way to switch back to light mode. :]

Oooo that's an interesting concept. I do usually prefer dark themes over light, but HF isn't really a "light" theme right now either. I'm not quite sure just how much different a dark theme would make or quite frankly if it would even work well on here. Idk, hard to explain. Would be cool if someone can whip up an example of what an average page may look like with such a theme.
Maybe an animated background?
All the colors are perfect at this point.

Definitely isn't bad as is, but you don't think the potential for it to be any better is there? I suppose it's subjective, but still.

it is one of the better grey-dark themes in terms of readability. Usually this type of color scheme can get botched so hard, but I've never struggled to read things on HF like with other dark-themed sites I know of.

I too have seen some other forums where how dark it is just doesn't work whatsoever and looks scuffed asf. Overall just makes the site look less quality and appealing. HF does the theme it has incredibly well.
Mother Mary blue and gold. Not sure how it'd be designed but, those are my picks.

I like how the theme is, I wouldn't want to lose it, but i would also add a very heavy on graphics and animation, super high tech.
Actually, maybe a medieval grunge theme. When I was doing web design, I always did dark textures, game-medieval style.
I think that would be pretty cool, although, might be a little difficult with current colors.
Honestly, it looks the same from where I left it. Just a few more added features.. I think the option to change the templates could be added but maybe for each owns user experience?

I too like how it is, but that isn't to say it couldn't be better or in the opinion of more than not at least. It's subjective at the end of the day of course. My guess is Omni probably has no plans of straying too far off from how HF is looking right now. That's alright though. No complaints here.
