Covid Round 2? H5N9 bird flu is now officially in USA

Many scientists say it is not a matter of if, but a matter of when.
When will one of these bird flu strains mutate to be contagiously spreading through the air and infecting humans?
What will the fatality rates be like?

Many researchers state that this will happen, so we must hope for proper vaccines and other medicines to be invented ASAP. To do this, they can study the poultry farms that are affected by bird flu, look into how they spread, and identify ways to lower the chances of mutations. For example, killing all poultry at an affected farm is a top priority. But so is lowering the amount of contact between the birds and people. The less interactions, the less chance of mutation. More interactions? More mutations. This is the specific reason they say it's a matter of when, not if, for one of these bird flu strains going airborne and infecting the human race. The number of interactions people have with poultry on farms is excessive - way too high to avoid the risks of mutations.

Some of these have fatality rates of 50% in known human cases, and that's without any sort of major spread, and without overloading the facilities. If there was a major spreading of this, it could spiral quickly. It would definitely cause a lockdown much more strict than covid ever was if it became airborne.

Only time will tell. Fingers crossed it does not mutate. But the scientists do say it will inevitably.
I know there are a few organizations (reputable, like the CDC) who are pushing for vaccines, testing kits, and more to be studied & created in advance. I think it's good that they are learning from the covid experience. Prepare sooner rather than later.

There are a few strains. The H5N1 is more common and the H5N9 had not yet been detected in USA - until now.
It has now officially broken through the borders and spread on a poultry farm. This is much more of a threat than anything or anyone else coming over our borders, that's for sure.

Quote:PARIS, Jan 27 (Reuters) - The United States has reported its first outbreak of H5N9 bird flu in poultry on a duck farm in California, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) said on Monday.
U.S. authorities also detected the more common H5N1 strain on the same farm in Merced County, California, they said in a report to Paris-based WOAH, adding that the almost 119,000 birds on the farm had been killed by Dec. 2.
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), commonly called bird flu, has spread around the globe in recent years, leading to the culling of hundreds of millions of poultry. It also spread to dozens of mammal species, including dairy cows in the U.S. and killed a person in Louisiana.

The strain that has caused most damage in recent years has been H5N1. H5N9 is rarer.
"This is the first confirmed case of HPAI H5N9 in poultry in the United States," the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in the report to the WOAH.
"The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), in conjunction with State Animal Health and Wildlife Officials, are conducting comprehensive epidemiological investigations and enhanced surveillance in response to the HPAI related events," it added.
I been warning of bird flu for a long time now.

If bird flu outbreaks in humans it will be an insanely worse situation compared to Covid. And it is not a question of if it is a question of when.

Unfortunately we have a bunch of dumbasses (mostly those on the far right) in this country who will claim it is fake, who will refuse any measures to help stop the spread and refuse any vaccine despite trials showing it is safe.

yep, pretty much....

Been aware of it for a while now. Hope Trumpo gets his shit together this time.

Well when Trump first took office the Obama administration actually left documents on measures to handle a pandemic and Trump actually ignored it.

Sources for what specifically?

If you are referring to it being insanely worse than Covid I base that on cfr. Covid at worst was 3% that obviously dropped.

H5N1 is between 50-60% depending on which source you look at but here is the good old AI which is the go to on HF these days.

AI Quote:
The case fatality rate (CFR) of bird flu (H5N1) in humans varies but is generally estimated to be around 50% in confirmed cases. This number can fluctuate based on the specific strain of the virus, the region, and healthcare conditions.

Unfortunately neither was the person who died in Louisiana recently from it.

The only thing saving us right now is that it's not airborne.

The one thing that will fuck us is if we get rid of all the programs designed to help with this, which we appear to be actively pursuing in the USA.

I am betting that will be put down because it is the WHO.

No no, didn't you hear? Even Mr Trump is going back on that. He is now saying we may rejoin WHO.

Oh I was not aware of him considering rejoining, I will have to look into that.
