The Next Gold Rush will be on the Moon!

Correct in the sense that what they were given wasn't an actual Moon Rock from the Moon, but it doesn't change that it was given to the Dutch Museum as a Moon Rock. These aren't my words, these are the words from NBC News, and all the other places that published articles about it.

AI Quote: Dutch national museum moon rock hoax?

You're on point—there was indeed a famous “moon rock hoax” associated with a Dutch museum. Here’s what really happened:

What Went Down
In 1969, former Dutch Prime Minister Willem Drees received what was believed to be a moon rock as a private gift on October 9, presented by the U.S. Ambassador J. William Middendorf II during a goodwill visit by the Apollo 11 astronauts.

After Drees passed away in 1988, the item ended up at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam in 1992, labeled as a moon rock.

In 2009, scientists investigated the sample and discovered it was not from the Moon, but instead was petrified wood—likely from the Arizona desert.
NBC News
Phoenix New Times
Wikipedia

Why Did This Happen?
It appears to have stemmed from a series of misunderstandings: Drees, who was elderly and had hearing and vision impairments, may have misinterpreted the gift. The museum also didn't perform proper scientific verification and relied on a verbal confirmation from NASA that it was "possible" to be a moon rock—despite having never examined the object in person.

Not a Conspiracy
This incident does not imply that real moon landings—or authentic moon rocks—are a hoax. In fact, genuine moon sample displays from the Apollo 11 and Apollo 17 missions were officially given to the Netherlands and are securely housed at the National Museum of the History of Science and Medicine in Leiden.
Wikipedia
+1

TL;DR
A faux moon rock at the Rijksmuseum turned out to be petrified wood.

It was likely a miscommunication and mislabeling—not an intentional cover-up.

True moon rocks do exist and have been authentically gifted and accounted for.

Correct. We will never know the actual truth.. we just know that it was said to be given to the Dutch Museum as a Moon Rock. Was it an actual Moon Rock? No. Whether it was mislabeled, miscommunicated, or a cover up, we will never know the actual truth.. as none of us were there. We're just going by what was said, and what was put out in the News.

The hardest part is getting a moon rock and next the money for the test lmao

🪨 How to Personally Test & Prove a Moon Rock is Real — Step-by-Step Lab Checklist

Ever wondered how you could independently prove a Moon rock is genuine without just taking NASA’s word for it? 🌙
Here’s the full procedure — from visual inspection to isotope testing — that you can hand to a university or meteorite lab.

⚖️ 0. Preliminaries — Legal & Handling

✅ Confirm legal ownership & provenance. (Apollo samples = government property. Lunar meteorites = legal & realistic option.)

📸 Photograph the sample with scale & color card.

🗒️ Document chain-of-custody & seal in tamper-evident bag.

🔍 1. Non-Destructive First Tests

📸 High-res macro photos.

🔬 Stereo microscope inspection (10–100×).

🖤 Micro-CT scan (if available).

⚡ XRF scan for elemental composition.

💎 Raman or FTIR surface scan.

💡 Stop here if it’s clearly wood, slag, or common basalt.

🪞 2. Petrography & Mineralogy

🪚 Prepare thin section(s).

🪨 Polarizing light microscopy (look for regolith breccia & glass spherules).

🔬 SEM + EDS mapping for minerals.

📈 XRD for mineral phases.

⚗️ 3. Bulk Chemistry & Trace Elements

🎯 LA-ICP-MS (trace elements, REE patterns).

🧪 Solution ICP-MS for rare earth elements.

⚡ XRF for major element abundances.

🧬 4. Isotope & Solar Wind Analysis

🌬️ Oxygen isotope ratios (¹⁸O/¹⁶O, ¹⁷O/¹⁶O).

☀️ Noble gas analysis (³He, Ne) for solar wind particles.

📅 Cosmogenic exposure ages.

📊 5. Cross-Comparison

🔍 Compare to known lunar sample data.

🧪 Replicate results at 2 independent labs.

📂 Keep full raw data, spectra, and method details.

🚫 Red Flags / Fakes

🪵 Wood grain or organic structure → petrified wood.

⚙️ Slag-like glass + metal lumps = industrial byproduct.

❌ No solar wind gases in a regolith sample claim.

📝 One-Page Quick Checklist

✅ Legal & provenance clear

📸 Photograph & seal sample

🔍 Macro & stereo microscope

🖤 Micro-CT scan

⚡ XRF / Raman scan

🪚 Thin section & petrography

🔬 SEM + EDS mapping

📈 XRD & LA-ICP-MS

🧪 Solution ICP-MS (REE)

🌬️ Oxygen isotope

☀️ Noble gas

🔍 Cross-compare to lunar datasets

🧪 Blind replicate tests

📂 Final report + raw data

💬 Final Tip:
A real lunar rock will match mineralogy + isotopes + chemistry + solar wind gases.
Fake samples always fail one or more of these tests. 🌙✅

What was the purpose of this? Just to test the orbit and reach moon with a rocket?

testing for water? This was a 2009 op (LCROSS), I didn't know they tried it before. xD

I love this guy.. (no homo)

Dude is funny as hell, and you never know what you're going to get from him next. Had the pleasure of shooting the shit with him last night about the moon, and bunch of other shit.. and he's an all around good character. Rsynced for President.

Thanks man! Started watching that Movie you shared last night in my living room on the couch with my Bro as I said I would do, cut it off to play Battlefield 6 since the BETA was running out... Going to continue it today. Might just watch it from the beginning again, think I only got 15 min or so into but I am hooked! Thanks for the share seriously, I love watching stuff like this...👍💯
