Are you really asking this question when Kali have published almost literally everything you could possibly need to begin learning? Please google.
https://www.kali.org/docs/ I can't believe this place sometimes.

Now I can understand that it can be easy to just ask for recommendations with first steps when there are hundreds or thousands of similar threads. Documentation is good, but it doesn't teach you how to really hack. There's The Ultimate Kali Linux Book, Offensive Security training, plenty of tutorials, getting started guides, hacking bundles, courses, learning paths, CTFs, etc. Also, some people join but don't have anything specific to post to avoid getting closed.

Didn't mean to get snippy with him. I only just now noticed it was in the beginner hacking section. Either way, I can definitely see how it may become overwhelming for those brand new to this but how do people expect to truly learn Kali if they are not able to research this themselves? And yes, I agree, but without that documentation or the resource you linked, OP would have 0 idea where to even begin. Kali is very powerful and deserves immense respect. If people new to Linux or hacking rush into Kali without reading anything about the OS; they will lack foundational knowledge that would otherwise make them far more proficient with using it. OP if you want more personalized help, feel free to DM me any questions you have. Sorry for my 1st reply. Long day. I came into this after nearly 6 years of IT. It really helped. Wanting to just push buttons without good technical knowledge is a bad idea. Issues can go on and on.

Linux is the way to go.
All I can say is, as I've said to most people.. Get a VM and run Kali / Linux before you fully commit to anything. Plenty of guides out there to navigate the basics on YouTube such as directories, tools, paths etc.
Just learn to walk before you run! The more you use it, it really doesn't seem so scary. Lol. Good luck.
Believe in yourself

Ish, you don't ask a person who's never driven to hop into a performance car and expect them to win the Indie 500 or whatever else cool cats race in, but it goes a long way. You will actually want to learn the Command Line first, and you don't need Linux as a daily OS for that, double so since a fair few beginner friendly ones hide the CLI try to. For this, I'd instead say learn the newer versions of PWSH, the idea of changing directories and understanding how parameters on commands and such work would be a fantastic start. Failing the PWSH route, install WSL on your main machine, use it to execute tasks, learn what it means to navigate a CLI, lick the marble on it. Step 2: Correct. There is no practical reason to ever install it as your main OS, to do so doesn't make you a hacker, it makes you look like an idiot, I don't care if you dual boot, having it on bare metal unless your drivers for some stupid reason need it, is dumb, it is built for hacking not for browsing the internet, so to violate it by installing whatever else you want on top of it like Steam goes a long way to make me think less of a person So, yes, VM away. Step 3: Also correct, find resources online that are free and legal to try against, you're new, if you go out and think you can hack a WiFi and claim you can, then someone might take that the wrong way and look a little further into you, plus in 5 years when the FBI comes looking for you and they do what they did to Ross they'll find you personal email on this account then tie to you, and boom, you're in jail and we're implicated as people you know since we helped, then it becomes a whole thing. Be smart, be safe, try not get into trouble, and learn. You need to not start by running, maybe learn to crawl, or walk first. (Oct 19, 2025 03:27 PM)DramaKing Wrote: And OP has yet to return. Just an obligatory post. Trust that he'll come back (he won't, low post count users asking to hack or aim for the moon of hacking never do). Like previously stated, I would not worry about which distribution of Linux you start learning on. I always recommend a website called Over-The-Wire. It is a gamefied approach to learning Linux. It is excellent for people that have very little to no experience with linux. I would then try to make linux your daily OS for everything. When you dont know something Google is your best friend. Learning linuxis so worth it. Once you learn it you most likely never want to go back to Windows. Atleast that is my observation over the years.
