The Absoulte beginners guide to jailbreaking

Spoiler (Click to View)

what is jail-breaking my ipod?

Jail-breaking, in the most basic of understanding, is "unlocking your "phone/ipod"
an easy way to think of it, is someone else has made an application and an exploit. this application's name is cydia, and the exploit, is a way to download it to your ipod/iphone.

once you have the app "cydia" on your ipod/iphone, you are able to add, well practically anything and everything.. especially everything apple didn't want you to have.
NO HOLDS BARD!
this includes all games and apps, themes, tweaks, movies, music, and the ability to ssh,and view all files in and folders usually hidden

should i jail-break my ipod/iphone?

yes..yes u should. 👍

if you are reading this, and you have not jail-broken your ipod.. your defiantly considering it.. just do it 😉

is it dangerous jail-breaking my ipod?

well... this is were its a little "tricky"

people believe different things. but i am going to tell you what i believe.

jail-breaking has many variables, and takes a basic understanding of knowledge, without this knowledge you can in fact do some damage.

some firmware is not supported to be jail-broken at the moment, so installing the wrong Jail-break on the wrong firmware then there can be problems!

as you may or may not know, jailbreaks are not an "official company release" so they are not supported for help from anyone except on forums and friends. also this means that some random dude who made this Jailbreak , and therefore is not 100% reliable.

most jailbreak issues however, can be fixed. simply by "restore" with i tunes. and some advances jailbreak issues, can be fixed with DFU mode.
so 90% this jailbreak option is quite safe =]

will it void warranty?

pfft haha you kidding me. apple would kick your ass so hard! XD

to answer the questions. if they catch you, im sure it would.
but the chances of them catching you, is slim too none!
if you "restore" your ipod. apple will never even know of the jailbreak.
so, as long as there un-aware of the jailbreak your warranty is valid!

Will apple catch me if i jail break my ipod?

0.0... no. if you send your ipod into them jail-broken, then yes. and you are an idiot XD

is it reverse-able?

yes, a simple ipod update through i tunes will restore the ipod to its original form.
edit: there are also a few other ways. but that is the easiest
restoring your i pod will induce factory settings. this means there is no evidence of jailbreak. also, if you have backed up your ipod, u can just format it back to that state!

How can i jailbreak my ipod?

well, firstly. find out what firmware your ipod is using if it is below version 4.0 then you are in luck!!
simply connect your device to the intenet and type this into the url
"www.jailbreakme.com"
...the name said it all. follow the prompt "slide to jailbreak" and your done!!

if that didnt work for you, your firmware is to knew. and you will need to try either
- Greenpois0n
or
Redsn0w

after downloading that software (available for mac and windows) all that needs to be done is "follow the steps"

if you had any error's look at the bottom of the thread for troubleshoot

is there anything i should know before jail-breaking my ipod?

ahh,
it is good to know your ipod/iphone version eg 2.1 or 4.2.1 or whatever. it is also good to understand how to put your device in DFU mode,
in regards to backup's its always good to backup your device before a jailbreak, especially if your device has lots of paid for goodies. a backup can be very simply preformed in itunes.

ok iv jail-broken. help!? what now!?

you now have an app named cydia. remember i told you about cydia earlier. you used your jailbreak software "exploit" to put your "hack application" cydia on there... well, you may now orgasm and foam at the mouth.

simply open cydia and browse, you can download all sorts of nifty things.
also, you may need to know about Repository's.
go to cydia>manage>sources
this is your repo's currently on your device.
you may want "gameboy emulators or paid themes" people have cracked them for public use and uploaded them. you may download there repo via here.

simply.. google the "whatever it is" you want (provided its not already in cydia) look for someone who has made a repo with it. copy the repo address, and go to cydia>manage>sources>edit>add "repo source"

and if everything whent well. then you may browse through the repo and use whatever 😎

To install a theme or application, you simply click the theme or app name, and lcik install "top right".

whats some repo's with good shit in them.

repo list
all you need is there. enjoy.

i jailbroke my ipod to hack tap tap revenge..

...ME 2!!!

haha ill help a brother out then hey =]

heres how to do a score hack! this is also a good exp hack and coin hack.

firstly, download ifile in cydia, or find the cracked version via repo's
this allows you to browse your ipod files and directory's.
next download tap tap revenge 3 and 4.
..
next open i file and navigate to :
Code
root/var//mobile/applications/"ttrfolder"/taptap.app/themes/TTRDJ/THEME.cfg
now, search fo

Code
initOnePlayerMode
now under there add
Code
player.score = 99
save
close

you have now hacked ttr3. and as you know all your info carries across to tap tap 4 !!

note: be careful were u place your player.score. as wrongful placing of the code may cause some shit -.- just try to make sure it doesn't interact with any other code.

i want doodle jump free.

then download it with cydia?
..
well done u now have doodle-jump.

In fact, not only do i want doodle jump i want heaps of games from the app store!?

well in that case, there is a app known as "installous." this app is what we could call a "cracked app store" you can download many games and apps from here.

it can be located: in cydia sources. add this repo: http://cydia.hackulo.us
=]

how long does the jailbreak take?

using the www.jailbreak.com method. seconds.. minuts..

using the software, it can take a wile. if you are in-experienced, there is a few little fiddly things. but reading this guide, it wont take you any more then 10 minutes. if it does. it will jsut be things like downloading firmware.
the longest pars of this are:
-finding and downloading your firmware
-figuring out DFU mode (sometimes tricky)
-getting the right Jail-Break software for you.

i also recommend your ipod be fully charged.

does that mean i dont need itunes if i Jailbreak?

well, yes and no.
u can still use i tunes, but there are ways around it.
try Dtunes in cydia XD

will this slow my ipod or iphone down?

yeah, probably =]

i had an 8g ipod touch, and yes it slowed it down after a few weeks. i found as i downloaded more us-lees pretty shit it got slower.
i now have a 30g ipod touch, and it seems fine?
after fresh formatting the ipod, its returns to its normal speeds.
the problem i believe is when u first jailbreak your ipod, you download so much useless shit!
junk code everywhere!

troubleshoot me

if you get asked to upload your firmware go to here and download it: Firmware

if your using certain versions of 3.1 firmware use this:
Spir1t

having trouble with DFU?: DFU --(keep in mind some versions are done differently. google)

My theme is not working!: download winterboard in cydia. it is a theme manager. its required.

im an idiot and still cant work it out: ahh, pm me if u must 😧

some of my themes arnt working still: try turning summer-board on, or off. if it still is having problems, it may just be the theme and your firmware conflicting.
summer-board can be found in winter-board settings.

I get a "recovery mode" screen. did i fuck up?!: Nope=] u have tryed to put your device into DFU mode, and failed. try again 👍

i played around with this, and now when i boot up my device i get a frozen scrren at the apple logo: try putting your device into recovery mode. then connect to itunes. =]

Thanks guy's hope you enjoyed it!

This is a pretty informative, noobs guide to jailbreaking. Although I would like to add a couple things. About the "is it dangerous?" Include that if they do have some problems with it, they can just restore using iTunes and it becomes as good as new. And if it fucks up worse than a normal problem, then all it takes is putting it into DFU mode and restoring with iTunes.
About "voiding the warranty." All you have to do is restore with iTunes and they will NEVER know you had the jailbreak and you can keep your "warranty" (hardly fixes any problems you can't fix yourself)
done!! thanks for the feed back mate. =] glad you enjoyed it.
if theres anything else. let me know! =]

This is a great guide. I followed this for my new 3gs.

But I got a question, my old 3G when I went to restore it, it is now stuck on the apple boot screen, what do I do?
hmm, try putting it into DFU mode, or safe mode. connect it to itunes. and then restore it.
if that didnt work explain exactly what you did to get this error.

cydia>manage>sources>edit>add "http://cydia.hackulo.us/

If you entrust your data to others, they can let you down or outright betray you.
