Another review: D. Gray-man

Well I made a review on Escaflowne which seemed to turn out decent. I wanted to start sharing, in depth, my experiences with the anime I've watched.

Here I'll be reviewing the TV series of D. Gray-man which is 103 episodes long.

Here's the link to it on myanimelist:

What Got Me To Watch It:
Simply put, it was recommended in one of the stickies and after having played Jump! Ultimate stars on the DS I thought it would be nice to watch the anime behind some of the characters.

Summary:
(Taken from myanimelist.net... I have a bad habit of talking too much and spoiling things) Towards the end of the 19th century, Allen Walker officially joins the organization of Exorcists that destroy the beings known as Akuma; mechanic weapons made by the Millennium Earl with the suffering souls of the dead. Allen has both a cursed eye and an anti-Akuma weapon as an arm, bearing the power of "Innocence", a gift given to him as an apostle of God. Allen, along with his fellow Exorcists must put a stop to the Millennium Earl's ultimate plot that could lead to the destruction of the world and all who live on it.

Characters: (8/10)
The characters were great. They actually showed development. Acted their part inline with their personalities. My main concern was the lack of a romantic element which would have made the anime a bit better. I don't want to spoil where I believe the romantic element should have been placed but after watching it, you'll probably understand what I mean.

Animation: (7/10)

The animation seen throughout this series is adequate but considering the age (aired in 2006-2008). Either the quality I had was sub-par or it's just the animation, I didn't find it fantastic.

Story: (8/10)
Being an action/adventure anime, the story is of course the most important part. I found the story very good and engaging, introducing subtle plot twists to keep it interesting such as the levels of demons. The story itself is a story about struggles and the ability of humans to rise above these difficulties and be victorious. I felt that some parts were fairly repetitive though (such as the fights with demons).

Ending: The ending was quite good and sufficient for me. If you read up on it, a lot of people feel the ending was incomplete which I would agree with in some regards. They left it as a big cliffhanger which is a negative for a lot of people (including myself) but due to the nature of the plot I felt it was a good ending. There was enough resolved by the end that you can imagine a real ending by yourself.

Basically what the ending said:

Enjoyment: (9/10)
This anime was very enjoyable. I was able to watch 30 episodes in a row and still want to watch more, definitely not something I can say about Monster. There was enough action to keep me satisfied. Enough dialogue scenes to be able to develop plot and characters (though the entire anime is basically dialogue, even during the fight scenes). One thing that hurt my experience was that the compilation of episodes I had used different words in the subs. For example, one episode might use "monster", while another used "demon" and yet another used "akuma". There was a bit of comedy which also helped with the enjoyment at times and give me a nice chuckle. Parts were not dragged on and on, the writers did a good job of making a scene last long enough to make it worthwhile but short enough so that it doesn't get boring.

Overall: (8/10)
Overall a very enjoyable anime with a good plot and fairly good character development. Unfortunately lack of a romantic element, which I felt should have been included to make the plot and characters even more dynamic, is cause for at least 1 point off while the other point goes to animation quality and the small problems I had with the plot (ending and repetitiveness).

I do recommend this series for a decently long anime to watch.
