Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu

Notes:

This review covers the first season (13 episodes), and specials.

I took out the subsections of the review section for this review. This won't be a regular thing, but there isn't a huge extent that I can analyze this series to. You'd understand if you watched the series. Sorry for the short review

Summary:

The story centers around Akihisa Yoshii, the "baka" of the title. His academy rigidly divides up the student body into classes based on the results of tests. The prodigies are in the A class with reclining seats complete with air conditioning, but Akihisa is in F class, the lowest rung of the school ladder which is furnished only with low, decrepit tables and worn-out straw tatami mats. A girl named Mizuki Himeji is actually one of the smartest girls in Akihisa's sophomore year, but she had a fever on test day and was pigeonholed into the F class. Besides Mizuki (who Akihisa secretly adores), the F class also has Yuuji Sakamoto, the class president who has been Akihisa's friend and partner-in-crime since the freshman year.

The school happens to have developed experiments to summon fantasy creatures, and Akihisa decides to rally F class to take on the higher-tiered classes and seize their perks. The F class uses the summoned creatures in an all-out battle for school supremacy.

Review:

Soo...where to begin... (Don't you love how I always have super thought-provoking/interesting opening sentences to my reviews?)

When I first started this series, I didn't know what to expect. The rating was an 8, despite looking fairly dumb, and a couple other aspects of the show drew my attention. I watched the first episode, and really wasn't a fan. It hit my by surprise. All of the aspects that I look for in a good show were completely stripped away. That being said, it wasn't that the bad things were the only thing left, it's just that I'm not used to looking for the good things that this show had to offer.

So, that obviously sparks the question, "What does this show have to offer?" And that question isn't necessarily easy to answer. I'll say this, Baka to Test is definitely not for everyone. In fact, many people would start watching it and drop it immediately. I actually wanted to stop watching it quite a few times throughout the show. And as I continuously told myself how bad the series was, something amazing happened....I started to like it. I don't know exactly what it was, but there was just a spark that made me start to like the series.

The entertainment that I got out of this series may have just been that my standards were lowered after watching enough of it, but I believe it was moreso because of the humor, and the extreme situations. I would like to point out that the humor in this series takes a little bit of getting used to. For awhile, it was borderline "wtf", but I got used to it after a bit. Here are some examples of what to expect (slight spoilers, not in the fact that it will ruin the series, but that it will possibly take some of the humor away if you've already seen these pictures):

So, let's conclude the summary here. I really didn't tell you much about the series, but there really isn't that much to know. Baka to test can be viewed as a Japanese version of Dumb and Dumber. If you think stupidity is humorous, and you don't mind the dumb one being the main character, this show is for you. If you watch anime for plot, don't watch this. There is also lots of sexual humor/references in this show, although it didn't quite reach the point of ecchi. That's a weird last line for a review.

My Rating: ★★★★★★★★★★ 7.5/10

MAL Rating: ★★★★★★★★★★ 8.04/10
Great review, personally I enjoyed the anime and so did my friends. If you want a laugh it delivers.

For the most part, it really just wasn't my kind of humor :/ However, there were a few moments that made me laugh out loud, and I appreciated that ^.^
Hmm debating whether or not to add this to my stockpiled "Plan to watch list".
I beat off to this:

While I do prefer my humor to be a bit warped, I can't say I enjoy this series. Dropped it on episode nine.

Nice review though.
I agree with Wantei, I thought the first season was hilarious and the second was just OK but overall I really enjoyed almost everything about it.
Nice review, not sure if I'll enjoy this anime though, anyhow thanks for the contribution :)
