Quote:Washington: An 18-year-old Indian-American girl has invented a super-capacitor device that could potentially charge a cellphone in less than 20 seconds.
Eesha Khare from Saratoga in California was awarded the Young Scientist Award by the Intel Foundation after developing the tiny device that fits inside mobile phone batteries that could allow them to charge within 20-30 seconds.
The so-called super-capacitor, a gizmo that can pack a lot of energy into a tiny space, charges quickly and holds its charge for a long time, NBC News reported.
Ms Khare has been awarded USD 50,000 for developing the tiny device. She has also attracted the attention of tech giant Google for her potentially revolutionary invention.
According to the teenager, her device can last for 10,000 charge-recharge cycles, compared to 1,000 cycles for conventional rechargeable batteries.
"My cellphone battery always dies," she said, when asked about what inspired her to work on the energy-storage technology.
Super-capacitors allowed her to focus on her interest in nanochemistry - "really working at the nanoscale to make significant advances in many different fields."
The gadget has, so far, only been tested on an LED light, but the good news is that it has a good chance of working successfully in other devices, like mobile phones, the report said.
Ms Khare sees it fitting inside cellphones and the other portable electronic devices proliferating in today's world.
"It is also flexible, so it can be used in rollup displays and clothing and fabric. It has a lot of different applications and advantages over batteries in that sense," she added.

What do you guys think of this? I feel this is pretty amazing!
I would totally buy one. Keep it in my car so if I'm on a long drive and need to charge (cause I don't have a lighter adapter in my car, took it out) then I'd just pop it in and charge. Would be so nice. I'd probably pay ~$500 too.
Yes, me too! Incredible! It sounds great, but... will the big companies allow that to be marketed?

I think Google plans to buy the rights from the girl and sell it as their own trademark/invention...
Whoa! That's pretty much awesome at her Age, She do have a great future ahead!
Wow id buy one. Thats the rest of her working life finished, especially if she sells it to a large company such as google !
It's about goddamn time someone innovated with batteries. I'm forever frustrated with my Galaxy S2's poor battery life.
But, like a lot of new tech, it'll be a while before we see it hit the consumer market.
Okay, this is the pro. What are the cons? Speeds up for a phone replacement (bad for the phone)...

I agree Google always do stuff like this..
On Topic; Wow this girl could revolutionize the field of energy.. hopefully one day she invents something amazing that saves lifes.. 🙂
Such an awesome invention she has made. 🤝
thank god i'm sick of charging my phone for hourss
If it actually works its going to take years and years before we, the average person, gets it... :(
Pretty cool though.

I can already see the name now "Google Charge"
If I was the girl I'd do something like go on Dragons Den trying to get some sort of investment and selling it as her product instead of selling it to Google.
Thank god someone did this. It took forever but it seems like its going to be used 😉
