Looking for a tutorial on how to do this transparency in a certain way, in Adobe Illustrator.

I have two circles that form a ring around 2 letters that overlay the ring.

I'm trying to figure out how I can fade the ring where the letter overlaps into transparent and how I can make the inner ring transparent instead of a color cause it'll be on different backgrounds.

If anyone can help or have any idea on what it is called I would sincerely appreciate it.
