{TuT}{pics}How to install Backtrack 5 onto a Virtual Machine {pics}{TuT}

Please substitute Kali for BT5 https://www.kali.org

Here is a another tutorial for you guys.
This time I'm going to show you how to install Backtrack 5 onto a virtual machine.
I know this task is not extremely difficult but with the next TuT I am working on I felt it was appropriate.

You will need a couple of things to accomplish this.

I suggest VirtualBox, my personal preference.
Download VirtualBox: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

You will obviously need BackTrack 5, choose the options best suited for your machine.
Download Backtrack 5r3: http://www.backtrack-linux.org/downloads/

Go ahead and install VirtualBox
This is very straight forward, I don't believe I need to explain how to do this.

To start off you will need to install a virtual machine.

First run Oracle VM VirtuaBox, this is where you will be able to choose what OS to run in your VM
Click on New to add a new machine
[Image: BC9iGh5.png]

Then name the machine, since we are installing Backtrack, set the type and version to Ubuntu, if your using 64bit use the 64bit.

For this next part the recommended amount of ram (512mb) is most likely fine and depending on your machine you may not wish to dedicate more.
For this install I'm using 2gb (2048mb)

Next choose "Create a virtual hard drive now"

Leave the hard drive type alone as recommended
[Image: pqKg38i.png]

The next screen determines how the virtual hdd deals with its size, this choice is up to you
[Image: WfClRZc.png]

Here we set the maximun virtual hard disk size and location.
I prefer to leave the location alone and change the size from the recommended 8gb to 12gb
[Image: uNPn4qw.png]

Click create also I tend to raise the display memory from the 12mb up to 128mb by clicking the display tab.

So now we have the virtual machine setup, we just need to install our OS onto it now.

To start the install process, this is where I have found BT5 to differ from a Windows VM install
Just select your new virtual machine and click start
[Image: PnGY16E.png]

This screen will come up, click the folder and navigate to your BT5.iso file and click start
[Image: aeaiEMR.png]

What will look like a terminal window will appear just wait it out the Backtrack.iso is loading
Once it loads it will look like this and will load the top option by default if the timer runs out
[Image: raFnuG1.png]

The next step is to enter "startx" (without the quotes) once it goes to the root screen.

Then your UI should look like this with the install file go ahead and double click it
[Image: eApQSJZ.png]

I'll skip the:
Language select
Timezone select
Keyboard layout
The prepare disk for install (unless you have multiple virtual drives just leave this alone)

Click install and away you go

Once the install has completed you will be required to restart the virtual machine
After the restart you will need to login (remember this info as it is needed every time you boot BT)
The standard login and password are:
Login: root
Password: toor
At the root@bt:~# line enter "startx"
This will bring up the user interface now you can drag the install file to the garbage bin in the lower right corner.

The last peice of advice i can give is to install the guest additions by clicking Devices and Install Guest Additions
[Image: vLHFzsO.png]

Then just install them the same way double click the cd on the install file it placed down.

I hope you liked this tutorial it definately took some time to put together.

I have another tutorial in the works, which is going to be called "How to crack WPA wifi with Backtrack5" so Keep watching!
Really Nice Tutorial.
Thanks for sharing.. I love Oracle VM VirtuaBox
Good tutorial, new users shouldn't have a problem installing Backtrack onto VM with a tutorial like this.

Thanks I know what he's talking about, my statement was regarding the installation of BT5, there is no need to do that to use BT5. If you want "extras" then yes, but not to install it.
Everytime I resteart my VirtualBox crashes :(
Should I use another VM ?

Um, well that's a new problem for me, probably more suited in the VM forum:
https://hackforums.net/forumdisplay.php?fid=165

So every time you restart Windows? or restart your Virtual Box, or the OS installed on your VM?

I know there are people who prefer VMWare over Virtual Box, but I havn't had a problem yet so no reason to switch.

Sorry I can't really help with your question without more info, I would prefer not to go off topic if its a Virtual Box problem.
thank you for this :D verry help ful
i search long time this. big thanks mate.
Thanks very much for great tutorial.
