AA Weekly Overhaul Inbound
Not really anime news so I apologies but I wanted to make sure people read this. AA Weekly is due for an overhaul and has been for awhile. The current system we use to write is poor and often leaves me in a mess so the change will help that and hopefully you readers will notice the change in quality. There's two reason I'm mentioning this though, the main is that we are looking and are always looking for willing and able writers for all sorts of positions. If you feel you're capable, apply here. The other reason is that the overhaul is why a few of the Weeklys have been and may be late. Anyway, that's it for now. Deadline for the overhaul should be in a few weeks (so two issues), hopefully everyone will enjoy it as much as the staff are!

Manga Anime Guardians (MAG)
The operation "Manga Anime Guardians" (MAG) has finally arrived. The operation is designed to shut down streaming/downloading sites dedicated to showing copyrighted anime or manga they don't have the license for. Okay, what does this mean? In a nutshell, most anime streaming sites, such as Kissanime, Animefreak etc., don't actually have the correct rights to stream that anime and what they're doing is illegal. A few sites do have those license though and you can legitimately watch anime through Crunchyroll or Funimation, as an alternative to downloading legally, I'm unaware of one. If you're unwilling to subscribe to Crunchyroll (not sure why its super cheap), then your only alternative is to buy those expensive boxsets, yikes! MAG just doesn't knock down sites, on their site (click here) they do list alternatives to doing that illegal stuff, who has the license for each anime and where to watch or read legally, so its not all bad. Ultimately all the operation is trying to do is to help the anime industry by trying to stop those that watch illegally and give nothing back and you can hardly blame them for that. Discuss more on this thread.

Robin Williams Dies
So again, loosely anime based but I feel it wouldn't be right to include this; comedian and actor Robin Williams has passed away at 63. Why I wanted to include this is because Robin was a self-described anime fan. A quote from himself:
  • I am a big fan of Japanese animation. They make movies like Innocence Ghost in the Shell 2 and Appleseed in which they really look at the darker themes and I am fascinated by what they do. I love animation. It allows me to be free to create a character that is totally different than me. And with the Japanese, every film pushes the envelope a little further.
You don't often find many celebrities who will openly admit they like anime, and if they do its normally just the one or two they like and the popular ones. Instead Robin admitted his favourites were "Neon Genesis Evangelion, Akira, Blood: The Last Vampire, Cowboy Bebop, and, especially, Ghost in the Shell." That's a list to be proud of. The genius even named his daughter Zelda, that's right, after The Legend Of Zelda game series. Most of us here probably grew up with his films such as Ms. Doubtfire or Flubber and so I felt it was fitting to give him a little section in AA Weekly.

RIP.

Yoshi's True Name Revealed
For a long time Yoshi, the popular game character owned by Nintendo, didn't have a full name. He was simply named Yoshi and that was all. After 21 years it has finally come to fact he has a much longer and wild name, meet T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas. This all came to fruition when Console Wars unearthed an old official 1993 Nintendo character guide. The name's much more of a mouthful, so I don't see it catching on soon! Even more so, it turns out Mario isn't even human, he's listed as "Homo nintendonus", which explains alot.

Lady GagaxBabymetal
As much as I hate to admit it, Lady Gaga is helping all us weeaboos by making Japanese culture sort of, well... popular. She first had Hastune Miku open for some of her concerts in America, and now she's been pictured with the popular metal-idol band, Babymetal. Lady Gaga has supported some of Babymetals concerts and this is where the photo has come from as they pose together. As much as I don't like her music, she is helping us all out by bringing Japanese Culture to the forefront of America and the west and so next time one of us is ridiculed by some 13-year old girl or whomever, instead of saying "moshi-moshi motherfucker", we can simply reply: "well Lady Gaga likes it."

Ganta is the only survivor after a mysterious man in red slaughters a classroom full of teenagers. He's framed for the carnage, sentenced to die, and locked away in the most twisted prison ever built: Deadman Wonderland. And then it gets worse.

At Deadman Wonderland, convicts are forced into brutal deathmatches for the amusement of the masses, the cheers of the crowd drowning out the screams of the dismembered. Even when Ganta befriends Shiro, an unusual female inmate, his dark fate crushes all hope —until he discovers the strange ability to wield his spilled blood as a weapon. Ganta learns his new skill might be related to the murderous man in red and uncovers disturbing secrets that could expose those who stole his freedom. He's determined to see justice served —but first he'll have to fight for his life in a prison that holds a million ways to die.

Characters

Ganta "Woodpecker, N° 5580 " Igarashi
The main protagonist of the story. Ganta is a seemingly harmless, ordinary middle school boy who is framed for the slaughter of his entire middle school class, perpetrated by the mysterious Red Man. Sentenced to "death," he is sent to Deadman Wonderland, where he is initially confused and frightened by the brutality of the prison. Shortly after arriving, Ganta discovers he can manipulate his blood and, thus, is deemed a Deadman, a bearer of a Branch of Sin—a power that can turn blood into a lethal weapon.

Shiro
A mysterious albino girl that Ganta encountered during his first days as an inmate. Clothed only in a skin-tight bodysuit and muffly gloves, which conceals her heavily scarred skin, Shiro stands out among the other prisoners due to her bizarre appearance and mannerisms. To Ganta, Shiro's manner of speaking and acting remind him of a small child, even though Shiro is the same age as him. However, Shiro possesses inhuman physical abilities and has an intimate knowledge of the prison, having apparently lived there most of her life. From the beginning of the story it is made clear that, as children, Shiro and Ganta were close friends. Ganta, however, has no memories of his childhood, which greatly saddens and annoys Shiro.

Yoh Takami
A kleptomaniac and an informant to Assistant Warden Tamaki, Yoh was hired to watch over Ganta in return for large amounts of Cast Points. Though apparently friendly and polite, in truth he is ruthless, scheming and somewhat paranoid, given his position as a spy for the prison's staff. A rarity among the prison population, Yoh got himself captured and sent to Deadman Wonderland in hopes to find his sister Minatsuki and buy her freedom with the accumulated Cast Points he got from Tamaki. He cares deeply about her, so much so that he is often thought of suffering from a sister complex, much to Minatsuki's disgust. The two eventually manage to forge an estranged relationship.

Tails' Opinion
Deadman Wonderland. A good anime series based on a great manga. One of the few manga Ive actually read. The story was questionable. There are times when you love it and it makes actual sense, then there are some times when you kinda wonder how this happened and how we got to this point. I guess thats not a terrible thing, it makes you pay attention but at the same time it makes it feel like a 12 episode show that thought it was gonna be 24.
I give the story a 7/10

The characters are something I usually rave about in my reviews and in most of my reviews I praise what is done with the characters. Now I say usually because here it is just not the case. I didnt hate the characters but I only really liked Shiro and thought she was the only character that was actually interesting. I guess the problem I really had was that outside of Shiro and Ganta there is no dynamic between the characters, thats not what makes it bad though, what made it bad, or average at best, was that it seemed like they attempted to give each character a dynamic and connection to each other.
I give the characters a 5/10.

The art is very basic. Simplistic might be a better word. Im not saying that as a good thing or a bad thing, more of a safe thing for the show. There arent really any huge beautiful backgrounds or anything like that but there arent any moments when I just thought "man this just looks stupid." Like I said, it was pretty much safe. Neutral. But I have to give points for not actually messing anything up.
I give the art an 7/10.

Overall, Deadman Wonderland is still one of my favorite shows Ive watched. The interesting story, bizarre details, and slight taste of horror and mystery really give me that enjoyment. And the action was really good. It was a different type of fighting from what Ive grown accustom to in the way they fought (weapons/styles).
In terms of enjoyment I give it a 9/10

Programmargorp's Opinion
Instead of writing reviews on anime that's just finished airing, this time we're writing on something slightly older than that. From the artist behind the Eureka Seven manga, we have Deadman Wonderland by Kataoka Jinsei. With the adaption being done by Manglobe; while being a relatively new studio, has established a pretty big portfolio of works including Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai, Ergo Proxy and parts of the Hayate no Gotoku adaption. Since I watched this show back in the days of 2012, where I first discovered anime; I had extremely high expectations for every show that I watched. Looking back, I’m not sure if my scoring would stand as firm as it did back then, but here goes. So, Deadman Wonderland has a linear plotline of Igarashi Ganta following his imprisonment after surviving an earthquake and being deported to the prison/amusement park known as Deadman Wonderland. While there, Ganta meets Shiro and the story continues from there. I personally tried pretty hard to enjoy this story, but in the end I really couldn’t find a difference between this and the 9001 other shounen series that exist today. We have main character Ganta, his friend Shiro, his “supposed” friend Yoh and a bunch of people trying to beat the crap out of him. There’s just really nothing to differentiate this from the other 9001 series that exist.
Story wise, I rate this a 5/10

Again, being the typical shounen series there isn’t really much going for it in terms of the characters in the series. While these characters weren’t exactly “bad”, they were not above average either. We have typical shounen characters all around leading to a pretty mediocre display of them overall.
Character wise, I rate this a 4/10.

While Manglobe is a relatively new studio, they are doing quite well in the art department (maybe since the studio was founded by ex-Sunrise members?). While the artwork was decent, the art style isn’t exactly what “floats my boat”. No complaints here really.
Art wise, I rate this a 7/10

Excuse me for not doing an enjoyment section here, I watched this way too long ago to do an extensive writeup on how much I enjoyed it. Overall however, Deadman Wonderland is a medicore show based on a pretty overused concept. Chuck on some decent art and you’re well on your way to creating an average series. If you’re a big fan of shounen and don’t mind some gore, then this is probably for you. If you’re not, there’s better options for shounen out there.

Tails' Rating 7/10
Programmargorp's Rating 5/10

Gladly

Bleeding: Hey Gladly, how are you today?

Gladly: I'm doing good, how about you?

Bleeding: I'm doing well, been catching up on a lot anime here recently since I'm done with my summer job. Now I like to start off my interviews by getting to know my interviewee a little better. So why don't you tell our readers a little bit about yourself.

Gladly: Well, I'm currently an upcoming college student living in the central US with my dog and my parents. I'm Venezuelan so Spanish is my first language, but I guess I've taken a liking to English more. I'm also looking to major in graphic design or animation, so that should say quite a bit about me, haha.

Bleeding: Graphic Design sounds like it would be so much fun to major in! I'm about to start my third year as a CS major and let me tell you, it can get really boring sometimes. Now that I know a little more about you, let me ask you a pretty generic question for these parts. What is your favorite anime and why?

Gladly: Generic or not, that's a tough one. There are a few that are up there for me, but one that stands out the most to me is Neon Genesis Evangelion. I've rewatched it time and time again, always picking up something new or some new meaning to the show every time. It was way ahead of its time in terms of animation, concept, and plenty of other things. I love the character designs and all, but the thing I like about it is the hidden meanings and religious symbolism in it. It was written when the director Hideki Anno was in the worst situation of his life and was overwhelmed by depression, and he used this series as a way to air out his emotions. Also, I'm a sucker for giant robots.

Bleeding: NGE is what actually got me into anime like three years ago. After watching Evangelion 1.11 on Toonami one night I was hooked, just couldn't get enough. Since we're talking about Evangelion, which do you prefer, the original series or the Rebuild of Evangelion?

Gladly: Personally I enjoy the original more, there's something about it that's more satisfying. I didn't like how the rebuilds used CGI for the mechs. I like both though, especially Eva 3.33. The other movie series Evangelion has, Death and Rebirth, was a pretty good watch too!

Bleeding: I agree with you, I like both but probably the original more. Really looking forward to the fourth Rebuild movie, maybe we'll get an actual release date sometime soon. Moving on, are there any upcoming anime that you are looking forward to? Maybe something from what's to be aired this fall or winter.

Gladly: There are definitely a few shows I'm looking forward to both in the Fall season and the Winter season! The Fate/Stay Night Remake, Nisekoi OVA, and Psycho Pass Season 2 from Fall have got me pretty hyped, and we'll get Durarara Season 2 in Winter. Lots of good stuff coming up, anything you're interested in?

Bleeding: I'm looking forward to the Nisekoi OVA, Gen Urobuchi's new movie and of course the Fate/ Stay Night remake. I see you post a lot about the upcoming Fate/ Stay Night remake and I was hoping maybe you could explain to someone like me who might not know the difference between the two, the difference between Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven's Feel adaptions.

Gladly: Without getting into spoilers, Heaven's Feel deals with the route of the Fate/Stay Night Visual Novel in which you elope with the purple haired Sakura Matou, while Unlimited Blade Works is Rin Tohsaka's route. It's pretty great that both routes are getting their own movie adaptations pretty soon (Unlimited Blade Works already has a movie by the way). The reason people talk about Heaven's Feel so much, is because it is the only route that hasn't been animated yet. It's also the hardest route to get to in the Visual Novel.

Bleeding: I've been hearing a lot about both series, I just didn't know which one I should watch. Guess I'll just have to watch both! Now I don't know if you have been keeping up or not but the AA section flew through its last lounge and this lounge seems to be moving even more quickly. What would you say has attributed to the rise in posts here recently?

Gladly: I've noticed that as well. It looks like there are quite a few new users here in AA, which could be one cause. The other is probably just people getting comfy talking in the lounge, going off topic often. Can't say I'm a fan of going to bed and waking up to 5 new pages of random posts in one night. Heck, AA Lounge 6 was made while I was asleep and it had already reached 12 pages when I woke up.

Bleeding: I'm probably a little bit to blame for that lol, I've been posting around the lounge a lot lately. I like reading about what people posted so I usually end up reading the numerous amount of new pages when I wake up. If things keep up the way they are Hentai will be making a lounge 7 pretty soon. Well that pretty much wraps up this interview for now. Thank you for letting me bore you to death for a little while. Is there anything you would like to say to our readers, maybe a shout out or something similar?

Gladly: No problem, it was fun being interviewed, thanks for the opportunity! Shoutout to AA for giving me a place to talk about anime, as most of my friends don't watch it, shoutout to Happeh for rebooting AA Weekly, and a shoutout to you for conducting this interview!

Bleeding: Thanks! I'm sure everyone appreciates the kind words 🤝

Such a good anime. I wish I could of discussed it with everyone when it first aired instead of waiting for you to just watch it. ;-;
Nice AA Weekly as usual, hopefully we can get the revamp done soon, I cant wait to contribute again >_<!

Yeah, sorry its taking so long. Busy with lots so its taken awhile for me to get the wheels turning. If you imagine the overhaul as a ball, we're at the top of the hill and soon to roll downhill to the finish line. :p
Another pleasant read. was really happy when I saw Deadman Wonderland on here. Gj as always guys. :)

Great issue as always everyone 🤝 Music videos is still my favorite section.

So uh how's the length of the interview? Since you know, everyone complained about the first one.
Nice issue as always! Its a shame something like this happened to the comedy legend before his time came, I remember reading an AMA where he expressed his interest in anime and it caught me by surprise. What a heartwarming guy.

Best thing was he knew his stuff too. He wasn't just a casual fan but someone who had a solid interest in anime.
Another great issue, looking forward to reading this.
What happened to the manga section?

I liked it, glad you gave Deadman Wonderland a good rating I find it to be really underrated hope you guys check it out.
Shiro's tits = motorboat material.

Great issue as always :D
Manga highlights are gone for now. Think I need to find a new writer as Ra seems to have disappeared.

Happeh, have you guys ever considered doing upcoming anime in the weekly's or no?
