Virtual Private Network (VPN)

WikiMan Wrote:A virtual private network (VPN) extends a private network across a public network, such as the Internet.
It enables a computer to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if it is directly connected to the private network, while benefiting from the functionality, security and management policies of the private network.
A VPN is created by establishing a virtual point-to-point connection through the use of dedicated connections, virtual tunneling protocols, or traffic encryptions.

Thanks Wikipedia man 🤝

So why does it help me?
Let's take a closer look to what the WikiMan said:
Quote:It enables a computer to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if it is directly connected to the private network, while benefiting from the functionality, security and management policies of the private network.

Simplified:
If we are connected to a Virtual Private Network (VPN):
  1. Different IP
  2. Security (depending on the protocol)
  3. Anonymous
  4. Shielded from some attacks on the public network

Explaining with pictures: (Click to View)

Types of encryption/connection:
PPTP

Advantages:
1.) Works better on Mobile Devices (PPTP & L2TP)
2.) Speed PPTP is usually faster because it has a weaker encryption key

Disadvantages:
1.) when a PPTP server can't connect with the client it drops the connection This will exposé your computer to the Internet off the VPN. For some people this is unacceptable
2.) Stability problems on DD-WRT firmware
3.) Fixed Ports

OpenVPN
Advantages:
1.) Works good on DD-WRT routers
2.) Stronger Encryption
3.) more stable
5.) Port Modification and Protocol Modification Ability

Disadvantages:
1.) Requires Software
2.) Some consider it complex
3.) slower (i could really tell the difference between PPTP and Open VPN on my pi)

More information can be found at: https://www.ivpn.net/pptp-vs-l2tp-vs-openvpn

overview:

PPTP
Quick to install
Quick to use
Less security
No programs needed
originally for Windows

OpenVPN
Software needed
Some configuration needed
Better security
More stable
Quick to use

Owner of a Raspberry PI?
Make your own VPN

The dangers:

  1. Public VPN's and VPN's in general keep logs -> means less security
  2. Owner of a vpn server? ->usually responsible if you don't hand over logs
  3. not all protocols are secure
  4. VPN doesn't mean unvurnable be carefull ALWAYS

user7525 Wrote:My question is: is a vpn a good method for ensuring my online anonymity? More specifically:

How do I know if i can trust them? You don't
What are the risks of using a vpn service? Logs,...
Would transferring my online activity to servers abroad mean I am subject to the laws of those other countries, or would I still only be subject to the laws of my own country? I would say yes ^^
Can i relay my (imap and smtp) email traffic through them? Yes you can
Can i use the service combined with Tor and Tails for extra security, or is that not possible (or useful)? If the VPN allows Tor Traffic
Read more it's a really interesting discussion: http://security.stackexchange.com/questi...or-privacy

My thoughts:
Personally I would never trust a Public VPN for my Privacy
most of them keep logs even if they don't admit it. A VPN is for an extra layer of security and not for privacy in my eyes

143VPN
143VPN

Eternal. Wrote:143VPN uses the OpenVPN protocol configured with a beautifully designed custom client so that you can skip the hassle of having to manually configure OpenVPN with each file.

143VPN uses 258 bit encryption to keep prying eyes off what you do on your connection.
Great for securing your WIFI or PC. For those of you on Mac, Android and other operating systems you can still get the files without having to run the client.

143VPN is a fast expanding VPN adding new locations at the customers request all time time.

Proxy's

WikiMan Wrote:In computer networks, a proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application) that acts as an intermediary for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers.
From:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server

Simplified:
  1. Different IP
  2. Security
  3. Anonymous
  4. TOR
  5. proxy isn't a VPN

Differences between VPN and Proxy

StrongVPN Wrote:Think of a Proxy as a Web Filter. The proxy settings are applied to your internet browser whether you're using MSIE, Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Etc. When browsing the internet through a proxy server, all benefits with that server are used, for example, (Security, Speed, and Geographic Location). The proxy will only secure traffic via the internet browser using the proxy server settings.

Examples:
TOR -> Proxyserver
WebProxy (CGI) -> Proxyserver
Read more about CGI proxy

VPN = EVERYTHING
Proxy = SPECIFIC

Why would we use Proxy's?
Webproxy:
The good old times...
Remember 6 years ago 13-15 y/o kid trying to outsmart the schools filters on youtube/facebook/....

Other Proxy's
The good old times...
Remember the Skype IP fetch thingy's a while ago
trying to outsmart them with a proxy on your skype ^^

The dangers:
  1. Personal Information Risks
  2. Website Banning
  3. Transparent Proxies
  4. Spyware and Virus Risks
  5. Phishing Scams

Danger explained by a picture:
Spoiler (Click to View)

Personal Information Risks:
Simple, you're sending your data through another server the server could easily record everything

Website Banning:
some sites scan for blacklisted IP's so you can't really visit them while you're on your proxy

Transparent Proxies:
Some proxy's don't provide the desired security/anonymity level

Spyware and Virus Risks:
webproxys -> popups,......

Phishing Scams:
site offering fake proxy/vpn service so they can log your traffic
