As of this post, Nori is featuring this show as its background. Check it out.
Introduction
Every now and again, you finish a show and it leaves you with the feeling known as the "anime void". The Garden of Words did it for me. With its realistic characters and plot, beautiful scenery, and amazing dialogue, this show is definitely one that you should watch if you haven't already.
Story
The Garden of Words is a love story. And a rather simple one, at that. There are no plot twists, turns, unnecessary fanservice, love triangles, decapitated heads on boats, and the like. If you want a show that will give you an "OH SHIT" moment in terms of story, skip this. It won't have any of that. Simply put, it is about a 15 year old boy who stumbles upon a strange woman in the park one day. She is drinking beer and eating chocolate. The boy talks to the woman, and their story begins.
As a whole, I'd rate the story a 7/10. It's not really that interesting, but it doesn't get boring either. It moves at a realistic pace, keeping the watcher just barely interested enough in it to continue watching.
Characters
These are the two main characters (and the only ones worth mentioning). The spoiler contains a pretty large image, which may be annoying for some.
Spoiler (Click to View)
Without spoiling anything, both the characters are extremely realistic. You don't second guess them (like you would in other shows/movies in the similar genre). You trust them and develop an emotional bond to them by the end of the movie. I'd give the characters an 8/10.
Sound
The music in this show consists mostly of soft, brilliantly written piano pieces. So simple yet beautiful, the BGMs of this movie fit it perfectly.
10/10
Animation
Okay. Here goes.
The animation in this movie is drop dead gorgeous.
To date, it is by far the most detailed, most realistic, and most beautiful animation I have ever seen. No TV show, OVA, movie, or music video even comes anywhere close, not even 5 Centimeters per Second. Shinkai really outdid himself this time around. I would give art an 11/10 if it were possible. But since it isn't, a 10/10 will have to suffice.
Conclusion
This is probably one of my shortest reviews out there. It is, afterall, a 46 minute movie. If you're familiar with Makoto Shinkai, then you know what type of stories he tells. Heavy dialogue based, extremely realistic love stories, with no twists or turns. The Garden of Words follows that. As stated, it is a direct love story that doesn't beat around the bush with excessive filler and other obstacles added in it. I still loved the show, and for overall enjoyment, I give it a rating of 10/10, and would recommend this show to any romance lovers out there.
In my opinion, The Garden of Words isn't worth telling the whole world of its existence. Some people may not like how this story is structured, and how it ends. The characters and plot may not be the best in the world, but the animation and sound have set the bar that all animation studios should try to reach. And if you think I'm over exaggerating, Google it. I'd be surprised if you thought it any less than stunning.

Will you stay here with me?"
