Check out director Makoto Shinkai. He's not overhyped like Miyazaki and has the best animations in his movies. You can screen cap any moment and have it be a wallpaper. His plots aren't exactly the best however they are decent. Another thing to keep in mind is that he leaves a lot open for viewer interpretation.

knew it as soon as you said he leave things open, 5cm/s was great although I haven't watched anything else of his. Any recommendations on which to watch next?

The animation quality was great too in terms of actually movement of characters. No cheapness involved.
