[TUT] Allowing your R.A.T. through the Windows Firewall

So I was assisting a user in THIS THREAD. Where in this users instance they are running off a USB modem through the Mobile network.

Knowing many of these USB modems do not employ a firewall in them, I suggested they consider keeping their Windows firewall enabled for security reasons, but this also posed the problem of firewall configuration. So I whipping this up while waiting for him to reply back. I am hoping this will help others as well who may be faced with other similar situations.

When it is BEST recommended the windows firewall be kept on and NOT disabled:
  • User is on public wifi or hot spot
  • User is on a direct internet connection with no hardware firewall filtration (router, or similar network prepheral device)
  • User is on a Campus or University LAN, or Shared network resource.
  • User is at work

So how do I allow my ports to be open or data to freely pass through when in these scenarios?

Step #1

Access the Windows Firewall panel in the Control Panel of Windows.
And Click Advanced Options

Step #2

Figure 3: Add New Rule

Ensuring "Inbound Rules" is selected in the left hand side, the user must now either Right click and "Add new Rule" or Click "Add New Rule" in the right hand side.

In Add New Rule, user should specify "Port"
Click Next.

Step #3

Select "TCP" for protocol type. (Rule applies to)

Then Select Specific Local Port - User enters in their RATs configured port HERE.
Click Next

Step #4

In this dialog, User will generally leave this untouched with the "Allow the connection" selected.
Click next.

Step #5

Figure 6: Rule Applies to what?

In this dialog, for general users, I will recommend leaving the settings as default and all 3 options selected. This will ensure the rule works across the board regardless of network type you are on.
- Ensure all 3 options are checked off.
Click next

Step #6

Give the new firewall rule a name that you will easily recognize for later modification or deletion.
Click Finish.

And thats it folks. 🤝
Hope this helps a few people out.

Yea I know this is a very basic tutorial, but I figured if I am going to go through the motions for a single user I might as well write something up properly (although quickly I admit) that can be referenced later on not only by myself but others as well. 🤝

Cheers
