To me, Tokyo Ghoul was pretty sad, or Zankyou No Terror.

I finished Tokyo ghoul and I cannot wait for the new season. Last one I'll check out.

Since Nao pretty much took the ones I was gonna mention, take a look at Ef: a tale of memories. And if I'm remembering correctly, myself;yourself is pretty fucked up too.

As always, I left out suggestions that were previously mentioned.

Fuck I forgot about Charlotte one of the most sad anime's for me.

If I repeat others' suggestions, consider it doubly recommended.

There are few anime that actually strive to be viewed 'sad', but there are plenty that could be called 'depressing', or have characters that have a backstory, or are currently in circumstances, that could be called 'sad' or 'pitiful'. Sometimes there are anime that just have a climatic moment that defines the series, and is coincidentally 'sad'.

"Sad anime" is just too ambiguous, but I'll do my best:
  1. Elfen Lied

  2. Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai

  3. Clannad & ~After Story

  4. Kanon

  5. AIR (TV)

  6. Gunslinger Girl

  7. Penguindrum

  8. Asura

  9. Madoka Magica

  10. Angel Beats

  11. Plastic Memories

  12. Charlotte

  13. Death Parade

  14. Tokyo Ghoul

  15. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso

  16. Pokemon: The First Movie

  17. Brynhildr in the Darkness

  18. Garden of Words

  19. Code Geass

  20. X'amd: Lost Memories

  21. Darker Than Black

  22. Black Lagoon

  23. Steins;Gate

  24. Zankyou no Terror

  25. Akira

  26. Neon Genesis Evangelion

  27. Cowboy Bebop

  28. Haibane Renmei

  29. ef: A Tale of Memories

  30. Wolf's Rain

  31. Grave of the Fireflies

  32. True Tears

  33. MONSTER

  34. Shinsekai Yori

  35. Berserk

  36. Princess Tutu
