There are various ways to achieve this. Try using the Pen Tool. Draw your shape and then right click and hit 'Fill Path' and then right click again and press 'Delete Path'.

That helped for creating custom shapes, but what about those diagonal slanting sections? How do I achieve those?

Draw a rectangle, then go to Edit -> Transform -> Skew. You can now skew the rectangle; if you go to the transform toolbar at the top:



then you'll be able to do this very precisely by changing the 'V' value.
