Looking to create a CTF crew

Hello everyone!

After taking part in a few online CTFs on my own, it has become apparent that it's impossible to compete against teams of 3 or more people due to the fact that they can work on multiple targets whilst I am having to concentrate on one.

So my solution: go to HF and a few other places and gather some like-minded people to form a casual CTF-ing team!

My thoughts on the team:
  • Some kind of realtime central point of contact during a CTF - IRC perhaps, Im happy to host this
  • A location for planning and discussion of upcoming events and write-ups (possibly use HF for some of this, or maybe just IRC and github)
  • No obligation or pressure to take part in any particular CTF, but a willingness to get involved even just for a few hours if you are available
  • Members are to have some verifiable skill in a given area, even if it is just beginner level - anyone can pitch in and help. Topics are likely to be the common CTF flag categories such as reverse engineering, exploitation, forensics, cryptography, web.
  • Access to a selection of CTF VMs in order for people to practice their skills. Again I am happy to host this, but will only make this available to trusted users.
  • Members can remain anonymous if they prefer - no requirement to give up your identity.
  • An openness and willingness to learn, and a good attitude towards the rest of the team

I am not new to the pentesting game. If you think this is something you would be interested in then lets start a discussion. I think we probably need at most a ten person team to call on for a CTF, with a hope that 3 or 4 would be available to take part.

Get in touch!

What does CTF stand for? Is it an acronym or an abbreviation?

I was, always, thinking it would be, "certificate," because I meet it in situations where, "certificate," is convenient

Usually certification and certified are abbreviated to "cert".

Well observed.

Is that a problem? I specified that I came here for that very purpose...

And to you other guys, once I've got my post count up I will PM you, thanks for expressing an interest, this could be fun!

It's not. Post count and echelon are in no way determinable accolades of experience.

Not too many people on here that can actually hack, and I've never been a fan of CTF but best of luck with the group brother
Count me in. Still a beginner but not a certifiable newb either. I'll stay tuned in to this thread. 👍

I have some experience in linux day to day administration, some knowledge in hacking, so interested in this post.
I already do too many, otherwise I would join you guys :(
Day trading, real estate, contract security. Work wherever, fly for free.

Yeah I have participated in quite a few now (I was in the hackthevote one which I think you said you were in too?), but working with a team is the next logical step for me. Thanks for the interest though, maybe in future if you would like to team up then please get in touch :)

Sounds good - I've created an IRC channel ready to start a discussion once everyone who wants to get involved has expressed an interest!

I'll PM those who have requested to get involved with the IRC details soon and lay down a plan of upcoming CTFs and how I can get in touch with people to organise their involvement or availability.

Then we can decide peoples roles in the CTF - for example, a decent reverse engineer could have the support of a less experienced person who could be trying more automated testing and doing research on Google etc.
I'll pitch in if needed. CTF are fun.
