Nomination
The Nomination phase begins on the 20th of every month and ends on the second to last day of the month. A thread is created in the MOTM forum, in which all members have the privilege of nominating someone of their choice. They are allowed to nominate any member who fits the following requirements:
- Minimum of 500 posts
- 0% warning status
- Has not received the MOTM award previously
- Was not nominated in the previous month's poll
- Non-staff member (you can still nominate mentors and ex-staff)
- Has contributed in some public way during the month of the contest (group forums do not count)
- Is not the user running the contest
Members are allowed to ask others to nominate them (user X can ask user Y to nominate user X for a given month).
All rules apply during this phase (e.g. securing/asking for votes during this phase will get you banned from the contest if brought to the light at any time, even if you're already on the poll).
Selection
The Selection phase occurs on the last day of the month. During this phase, Ryan Reynolds reviews every nominated member and selects the most qualified to be featured on the poll. Qualities that are looked for are:
- Posting quality tutorials and threads
- Helping members out around the forum
- Respecting others and displaying good manners
- Maintaining activity
During this phase, you cannot contact Ryan Reynolds in regards to who will be on the poll.
Voting
It's up to the community to decide who the winner is. On the 1st day of the following month, the Voting phase begins and a poll is created within the MOTM forum. The poll will contain, at most, 10 members who have been selected to be voted upon.
You are not allowed to ask other members to vote for you. Members in the poll are not allowed to link to the poll at all; this is seen as hinting at or asking for votes. Any such attempts will get you permanently blacklisted from entering the contest and temporarily banned from the forum.
Members who are not in the MOTM competition cannot ask for votes on nominees' behalves. Members cannot intentionally ask for votes on behalf of a nominee with the intention of forcing their disqualification or ban from the contest. Users who are guilty of this will receive forum warnings or bans. The nominees themselves, however, will not be reprimanded unless they instigated or asked other users to create such threads or content. If necessary, Administrators may become involved to verify private messages or deleted content.
Members cannot use on-site or off-site media (private messages, public threads or group forums) to ask for votes, either on their own or on someone else's behalf. Members cannot advertise nor link to the MOTM competition in their signature if they are in the competition. Other members can link to the poll thread (in signatures, avatars, usertitles or posts), but they are not allowed to advertise nor harm another member in doing so. Links to the poll thread must link to the OP, and not to another post supporting or detracting from a nominee.
Other users cannot create threads (public or private) to encourage voting for another member. Users are not allowed to spam chat services or lounge threads to get people to vote for a given user.
The member that receives the most votes by the 7th day of the month is the official winner and will be granted the MOTM award, along with a new page as a notable member on the Hack Forums Wiki.
Any further questions regarding MOTM may be directed towards Ryan Reynolds.
Rules
All of the below rules apply throughout the entire duration of the contest (20th - 7th), which includes every phase. Many of these rules have been stated above, but have been written in the form of a list so that they are easier to understand and can be referred to when someone has a question.
- Nominees may not be nominated more than once in the same thread. Also, others are not allowed to post things such as "I second this nomination." Anyone who makes a post that isn't a nomination, or nominates someone that has already previously been nominated in the same thread, will receive a warning for not following the rules, and have their post removed.
- Nominees must maintain a minimum of 500 posts throughout the duration of the contest. If a user's post count drops below 500 at any given time, they will be disqualified and will have to wait a month before entering the competition again. The post count requirement excludes posts in the Junk and Ub3r Junks forums. This means that nominees must have 500 posts outside of these sections.
- Nominees must maintain a 0% warning level throughout the duration of the contest. If a warning level is received, the user will be disqualified and will have to wait a month before entering the competition again.
- Nominees cannot have received the Member of the Month award previously. Members cannot win more than one award, and therefor will not be allowed to enter the competition again after winning. The user who posted the nomination will receive a warning for not following the rules, and have their post removed.
- Nominees cannot be a Staff member. This also includes Admins, but does not include Mentors or ex-Staff members. A list of Staff members can be found here. The user who posted the nomination will receive a warning for not following the rules, and have their post removed.
- Private contributions do not count during selection. A nominee's contributions must be displayed in public. Threads or posts located in private usergroups are not taken into account. This rule does not apply to the VIP Area.
- Members ARE allowed to ask others to nominate them. For example, user A can ask user B to nominate user A for a given month.
- Nominees cannot link to the poll. Period. This includes linking the thread in a post, signature, profile, PM, and off-site. This is considered as hinting or asking for votes (see the rule below). It does not matter what the intentions were, or if the link wasn't accompanied by text. It's not allowed. Breaking this rule results in disqualification and a possible ban from the contest.
- Nominees are NOT allowed to hint for or ask other members to vote for them. Any such attempts will get them permanently blacklisted from entering the contest, and temporarily banned from the forum.
- Nominees are allowed to post ONCE on the voting thread.. Any attempts to post more than once will result in a permanent blacklist from entering the contest.
- No bashing a nominee. Bashing of a nominee will result in a warning. And any nominee bashing another nominee will result in disqualification and a possible ban from the contest.
- Members who were not nominated cannot ask for votes on nominees' behalves. Any such attempts will get the user permanently blacklisted from entering the contest, and either warned or temporarily banned from the forum. Depending on the severity, the nominee may also be disqualified from the contest for a certain amount of months. In addition, members cannot intentionally ask for votes on behalf of a nominee with the intention of forcing their disqualification or ban from the contest. Users who are guilty of this will receive forum warnings or bans. The nominees themselves, however, will not be reprimanded unless they instigated or asked other users to create such threads or content.
- Non-participating members CAN link to the poll thread. This includes signatures, usertitles, posts, or PMs. However, they are not allowed to advertise another user nor harm another member in doing so. Links to the poll thread must link to the OP, and not to another post supporting or detracting from a nominee.
Rules may be added or modified at any given time.
Below you will find the most frequently asked questions. Please read them. If your question is not answered here or anywhere else in this thread, send a PM to Ryan Reynolds.
- I think that one of the participants is breaking the rules. How can I report it?
If you believe that someone is breaking the rules, send a detailed PM to Ryan Reynolds. Include any proof that you have. If the rules were broken off-site, it is less likely that action will be taken, but will be taken into account in some cases.
I don't understand the rule about linking to the MOTM poll thread. Can you give me some examples?
For example, this post or signature would result in a MOTM ban for Jimmy. Jimmy is in MOTM this month.
This post or signature would result in a forum ban or warning for Michael. Michael is Jimmy's friend or wants to get him disqualified.
This post or signature, however, would not. Ryan is not in the poll for this month.
