Your obligation is one drill weekend a month. Most drills are Saturday+Sunday, some are 4-5 day drills.
Once a year you have "Annual Training" or "AT," and its two weeks straight during the summer months, usually somewhere other than your base unit (i.e. California, Alaska, etc.)
College professors are really lenient on giving you time off and allowing you to make up work (I think they're legally required even). I've never had an issue. Professors have always allowed me to make up work / reschedule exams. You get an "employee letter" from your unit pretty much stating you're on orders from X day to X day and can't make it to school/work.
If you have finals and can't reschedule them you may be able to RIDT (Replacement of Inactive Duty Training) and essentially make-up the drill weekend you miss. It depends on your unit. Professors will make exceptions regardless.
You also get to use a portion of your GI Bill towards school. (~$380 a month for school)

I live in Arizona, west of the Mississippi, so I went to MCRD San Diego in California.

We only really travel within the state. I live in Arizona so we train all around. Fort Huachuca, Navajo, Flagstaff, Page, etc.
Once a year you have Annual Training and you 99% of the time will travel a bit. Our last one in June/July we went to 29 Palms in Southern California.
You get paid per "drill."
Each full day = two "drills."
An E1 (Private) gets paid around $50 (after tax) per drill.
So if you have a Saturday/Sunday drill weekend, thats -4- drills, and it'll be around $200.
