Do you need to have a wifi card installed to use a usb wifi adapter, or does the adapter have the same function as a wifi card?

i dont have wifi cards so i was planning on buying a couple of these:

I have this and it plugs in to the back and it works. So I don't think you need a card. But don't quote me on that
wifi usbs don't last long, I advice buying a wifi/bluetooth card

A USB WiFi adapter is standalone, it doesn't require anything else.

I agree.

I've gone through a fair share of USB adapters.
I've been using the same USB Wifi Adapter for 5 years now, works perfectly fine still.

Most are plug n play, some you may need to install drivers. SOME.
Thank you guys got the answer I was looking for
