The month of September isn't really known for its holidays. The USA only has Labor Day, and those located in the United Kingdom have none. However, the Japanese actually have two, sometimes more holidays; all of which we might find unusual.

Respect for the Aged Day (敬老の日 Keirō no Hi)

This national holiday has been celebrated since 1966, and was originally held every September 15th.
In 2003, it switched to the third Monday of September to follow the new Japanese Law known as the *Happy Monday System.

Respect for the Aged Day is fairly self-explanatory; it is held to honor elderly citizens.
While it wasn't deemed a national holiday until 1966, it can be traced back to 1947 when Taka-cho (then known as Nomadani-mura) which is a city in Hyogo Prefecture, held a party and proclaimed September 15th as Old Folks' Day.
It is common for a regular Japanese citizen to convey feelings of gratitude and good health for their grandparents, parents, or other elderly people in their neighborhood.
The holiday also aims to celebrate the longevity of and respect for the elderly who have devoted themselves to society for many years.
Festivals are also held across Japan in some cities, such as Kumamoto and Chicuma to name a couple.

Extra Fact: Since 1963, the Japanese government has given commemorative silver sake (酒) cups to Japanese who reach the age of 100. In 1963, only 153 received this. But in 2014, 29,357 people received the cup. This led the government to consider making the cups from a different material or simply sending a letter instead.

Autumnal Equinox Day (秋分の日 Shūbun no Hi)

This day became a national holiday in 1948, and due to the necessity of astronomical measurements, is not officially declared until February of the previous year.
In 1947 and before, Autumnal Equinox Day was known under a different name, Shūki kōreisai (秋季皇霊祭), and was an imperial ancestor worship festival with *Shintoism roots.
The Japanese use this day to pay respects to deceased family members, and often visit family graves or hold reunions to honour those who have passed.

Extra Fact: Since ancient times, the Japanese have believed that their deceased family members briefly return to the human world during this week.

Silver Week (シルバーウィーク Shirubā Wīku)

Silver Week is a Japanese term that refers to a string of consecutive holidays in September.
Japanese law stipulates that if there is only one non-holiday in between two public holidays, that day should become an additional holiday, known as a Kokumin no kyūjitsu.

Example: If Respect for the Aged Day falls in September 21st and Autumnal Equinox Day falls in September 23rd, then September 22nd is declared as a people's holiday (国民の休日 Kokumin no kyūjitsu), creating Silver Week.
The most recent Silver Weeks took place in 2009 and 2015, with the next one in 2026.

Bonus

*Happy Monday System - A set of modifications to Japanese law to move a number of public holidays in Japan to Mondays, creating three-day weekends for those with five-day work weeks.

*Shintoism - Also known as Shinto, is the ethnic religion of Japan that focuses on ritual practices to be carried out diligently, to establish a connection between present-day Japan and its ancient past.

Author's Note: I hope you all enjoyed this (not so) little section on some of Japan's national holidays! As my first piece for Baka News Weekly, I wanted to make sure it was extra good (hence its length).
I look forward to writing more about Japanese Culture in feature editions!

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket

[Image: 3Mlk8fr.jpg]

Synopsis (Courtesy of MAL):
Quote:Alfred Izuruha is a 10-year-old who lives in the neutral colony cluster of Side 6 and, like most boys his age, is obsessed with the war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon. Unbeknownst to him, Al's next-door neighbor, Christina, is the test pilot of a prototype Gundam being developed in secret by the Earth Federation in the colony. A Zeon Special Forces team is assembled and tasked with infiltrating the colony in order to either steal or destroy it.

When a skirmish breaks out between the Federation and infiltrating Zeon forces, the fascinated Alfred stumbles upon a Zaku mobile suit that has been shot down, piloted by Zeon rookie Bernard "Bernie" Wiseman. After this encounter, the two start a mutual friendship, so Alfred can learn more about the war that interests him so much, and Bernie can acquire inside information about the colony to aid his team's mission.

Eps: 6 (OVA)
Studio: Sunrise
Genre(s): Military, Sci-Fi, Adventure, Space, Drama, Mecha
Aired: Mar 25, 1989 - Aug 25, 1989
Sub/Dub: Both decent and done well
Similar anime: Anything in the Gundam franchise, Hotaru no Haka, Bubblegum Crisis
MAL Note: It is recommended that you watch the orignal Gunda, 0079 or the 3 summary films for the series before this OVA

In regards to war, one might on occasion find some of the more compelling stories from the perspectives of those on the sidelines. Such is the case in the OVA War in the Pocket (WIP for short). WIP presents the innocent view of a child in the midst of conflict that rarely ever comes into contact with everyday life for him, something that isn't really found elsewhere within this franchise. The plot shows the interesting dynamic of a neutral region in the main conflict of the original series by involving well-developed characters that drive the story forward. Art and animation are well done for its time, and the sound design is pleasant as well. As mentioned above, I would recommend watching the original Gundam series first so that you can grasp the situation of the OVA to appreciate it even more. However, if you are a fan of the mecha series and looking for a gem among the franchise, I highly recommend this to you all. ;)

Tomie

[Image: td15m1o.jpg]

Synopsis (Courtesy of MAL):
Quote:Tomie Kawakami is a femme fatale with long black hair and a beauty mark just under her left eye. She can seduce nearly any man, and drive them to murder as well, even though the victim is often Tomie herself. While one lover seeks to keep her for himself, another grows terrified of the immortal succubus. But soon they realize no matter how many times they kill her, the world will never be free of Tomie.

Chapters: 20
Volumes: 3
Author(s): Junji Ito
Published: 1987 - 2000
Genre(s): Drama, Horror, Supernatural, Josei
MAL

Another classic horror manga by Junji Ito, this time in regards to the relationships surrounding a mysterious young woman that attracts nearly every man she comes into sight of. This manga is more along the lines of several short stories involving the same woman, creating an interesting anthology of related incidents with their own horrifying twists. I recommend this to anyone in the horror genre, and to any of Ito's work in general. ;)

Steins;Gate

[Image: 2184VVD.jpg]

{Synopsis}
The self-proclaimed mad scientist Rintarou Okabe rents out a room in a rickety old building in Akihabara. He then indulges himself in his hobby of inventing prospective "future gadgets" with fellow lab members: Mayuri Shiina, his air-headed childhood friend, and Hashida Itaru and a perverted hacker nicknamed "Daru." The three pass the time by tinkering with their most promising contraption yet, a machine dubbed the "Phone Microwave," which performs the strange function of morphing bananas into piles of green gel.

Though miraculous in itself, the phenomenon doesn't provide anything concrete in Okabe's search for a scientific breakthrough. Until the lab members are spurred into action by a string of mysterious happenings before stumbling upon an unexpected success—the Phone Microwave can send emails to the past, altering the flow of history.

Adapted from the critically acclaimed visual novel by 5pb and Nitroplus, Steins;Gate takes Okabe through the depths of scientific theory and practicality. Forced across the diverging threads of past and present, Okabe must shoulder the burdens that come with holding the key to the realm of time.

MAL

{Personal Opinion}
Steins;Gate is one of the most, if not the most, sentimental anime that I have ever seen. Perfectly executed, from the design to the plot to the soundtrack, I have pretty much nothing to complain about. There was some fan service, however only a very small amount that didn't diminish the overall serious tone of the story.

{The Story}

Spoiler (Click to View)

{The Characters}
Steins;Gate portrayed the characters well and showed one of the best character development. Okabe, a character who would be considered crazy and eccentric is portrayed as someone normal in the anime, as well as someone you can sympathize with. Kurisu's opening up to love is gradual and beautiful, and we eventually could see that Mayuri, despite seeming air-headed, is someone who understands Okabe and his feelings the most.

{Overall}
The anime is a masterpiece and I have nothing to complain about. I'm waiting for Steins;Gate 0's release and would love to see more growth between Okabe and Kurisu.

New Release
Popular JPOP group called Perfume released a new music video for their new song "If you wanna" which release 8/30/2017. This song was highly anticipated since their hasn't been a release from Perfume in a hot minute.

Anime OP of the Week
For this week's edition, I decided to choose my personal favorite anime OP and ED due to my first time doing the section. I have chosen "Re:Re:" by Asian Kung-Fu Generation from anime Boku dake ga Inai Machi. A heavy yet upbeat song that can get anyone's attention.

Anime ED of the Week
The ending theme for this weeks edition is from the anime Psycho-Pass. Song named "Namae no nai Kaibutsu" from popular group EGOIST.

Honorary Mention
For my personal choice this week I have chosen "Swaying" by Soraru. The song features a beautiful story along with a amazing song.
