Long story short I have a friend who works as an IT technician and the company he works at is decommissioning various servers they have.
They are offering their employees a matched pair of SLBV3 X5650s and a SuperMicro X8DTT Dual Socket Board for $90. Selling the CPUs and the motherboard individually can fetch around $140 so it's clearly a good price but I have no interest in purchasing just to resell.
I was wanting to find out here if it would be worth building it (requires RAM, PSU and a basic video card, got spare HDDs for days), as in would I be able to monetize the server in some way that I would eventually recoup its cost. For example I calculated that I would be able to profit more or less $15 a month mining Monero at the current difficulty so would take a year to get my money back and have a server worth $200 in parts (depending on difficulty increase).
I estimate the entire build to cost about $160. So yea, anything monetizing that would take advantage of the 12C/24T setup? 🤝
