My Friend's Mom Died Yesterday

One of my best friend - his mother died yesterday and he came to me and told me everything.

I said, "I am sorry but you will have to stay strong. If you need any help, feel free to let me know."

Then we sat at a cafe for 30 minutes after finishing our work and I saw he was holding his tears back while talking about his mother.

I really felt the sadness and had 1 or 2 tears by myself. After he finished, I didn't know what to say.

So I just repeated the same sentence again. I am not good into these type of things but that doesn't mean I wasn't feeling it. I am still sad for my friend.

Now the reason I made this thread, is to ask, what you would have said in this situation, to make him calm and feel good. I will obviously meet him tomorrow again and I need some advice from you guys. Please help me. I don't want to see him sad.
"It is a simple logic truth that, short of mass emigration into space, with rockets taking off at the rate of several million per second, uncontrolled birth rates are bound to lead to horribly increased death rates."

- Richard Dawkins (The Selfish Gene)
Damn, this must suck for both you and your friend. Make sure to show you're there for him and I'm sure he'll appreciate your effort and help.
I don't know why but saying 'I am sorry but.." makes it sound weird, no?
remove the 'but' at least
I'm just like you. I mean, I feel bad for people but I'd rather laugh it off than talk about serious and emotional things. It feels awkward when talking to people about those things, honestly though I think it'd be best for you to be a 'break' for him, so when he's around you he can forget what happened and just enjoy himself; that's the type of guy I am anyway, I'll never be the type of friend to offer a shoulder to cry on.
Hope everything goes well for you and him.
Sucks to see our friends hurt.

P much the same thing you said. I would have said that all things are temporary and this is one of the experiences in life that helps you come to terms with that fact of reality. On the bright side, with all things being temporary, your friend's grieving will subside eventually. You can help with that if you care about your friend. Make sure he gets enough fresh air everyday, visit him at his house, etc. etc.
Don't worry so much about saying the right thing. The important thing here is that you are there for him.

He just lost his mom, so being there for him, talking to him, visiting him will help alot.
When something like this happens even if you wan't you can rarely help someone stay calm, even if he stays calm (outside) he will be dying inside. It really hurts
Damn that sucks. horrible news. R.I.P.
Honestly, hug it out man. It'll be a good release for him and you won't have to worry about saying something wrong/not as you intend. Outside perspective here as I wouldn't know what to say or do on the spot either.

Sorry to hear this, it is big loss for anyone. Hard to imagine pain of a person in such a situation.
make sure to be there for him man, just try to calm him and tell she's in a better place right now.
