Lately, I've gained interest in the .NET framework.
Here is a diagram of the lowest .NET version an OS comes with.
Windows Vista - .NET Framework 2.0
Windows 7 - .NET Framework 3.5.1
Windows 8 - .NET Framework 4.5
Windows 8.1 - .NET Framework 4.5.1
Windows 10 - .NET Framework 4.6
Now my question is if I develop an app based on .NET Framework 2.0 it will surely work on Windows Vista without installing additional software but what about for example Windows 10. Is .NET Framework 4.6 backward compatible with 2.0?
I've tried running a 2.0 app on a freshly installed Windows 10 and in fact, a popup came up saying that it recommends me to install the older .NET framework for the app to run, why is it so? Because I've read that .NET frameworks are backward compatible.
Thank you 🤝
v2 will run on all versions if its installed (the same for all versions) and ppl dont get it

I agree with Orka. And you can always change it later if so desired.

2.0 and 3.5 won’t run if 4.0+ is installed only (modern computers). Quit saying things that will keep people from using .NET 4.0. Do some actual research before you post such a statement

I see, is there a way to configure a 2.0 app to also run on 4.0+?

I don’t know if there are any hacks to do this, you’d have to do your own research on that. I would just target net 4.0 for anything, including malware

I found a stackoverflow post where it says that 4.0 and up is backwards compatible with 2.0, you just have to add supportedRuntime 4.0 to the config and it would work normally.

Hell, give it a try in a virtual machine, and it if works like that, make a tutorial thread. I bet a lot of people would be interested and thankful for that.

From everything I find online it seems to work as long as you do this:

Of course it doesn't always work as expected, as explained here:

Use app config and supported runtime and it will probably run just fine.
