Introduction
Want to talk with other members of the community in a secure chat environment? Look no further! This guide will show you how to set up an XMPP client and account before finally explaining how to join the Hack Forums chat room.


Part #1
First, you will need to download a XMPP chat client. XMPP.org provides a list of available well-known clients, found here:
https://xmpp.org/software/clients.html

Pidgin is the most popular client used by HF members, so I would recommend it. Although, feel free to use a different client if you wish.

Here's a quick guide for setting up Pidgin:

Step #1: Visit Pidgin's home page, found here: https://www.pidgin.im/

Step #2: Click the download button. Your download should start automatically after a few seconds.

Step #3: Open the installation file that looks like this:



Step #4: You will be greeted by this window:



You will need to click "Next" three times, then press "Install".



Once you've installed Pidgin or the client of your choosing, proceed to "Part #2".


Here's a quick guide for setting up AstraChat (mobile device client):

Step #1: Download the app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store:



Step #2: At this time, skip to "Part #2" to learn how to register for a XMPP account.
Once you have registered your account, open the AstraChat app and press "Setup Account".



Step #3: Now you will need to fill in your username, password, and desired alias:



Your mobile client is now completely set up. Skip to the "Final Part" to learn how to join the HF chat room.



Part #2
Now that you have your client software installed, you are going to need an account. You can register for a Hack Forums XMPP username by visiting the registration page, found here:
https://hacker.im/register


Part #3
After you've successfully completed your account registration, it's time to start up your client and join the chat room. With your client open, sign into your XMPP account. When signing in, you will be prompted to enter your username and password, along with the protocol and domain you wish to use. For the protocol, select "XMPP". For the domain, type "hacker.im", and then fill in your login info.




Once you have successfully logged in, you can join the chat room.


Final Part
When joining the chat room, your client will ask you to enter a room and server name. Here is the info for the official HF chat room:

Room: hackforums
Server: im.hacker.im



If you save the chat in your contact list it will be easier to access later on.

I can personally suggest Pidgin. Try downloading that. It’s very easy to use. I am going to update this thread with tutorials for setting up each client that I suggest.
