Got the code, placed an order.
What JFK should tell you is, you log into an account that has the rewards on it. However, when you place an order, since you're logged into that account, it does send an email to the email address on file...

You don't need to sign in to order, you can just apply the promo code at checkout.
If you want to use in store, you must login on the American Eagle app.
